Default Brought my first 928 home!

Well the 1979 OB 928 5 spd is in the driveway, via trailer!

A few pictures attached. Car is definely 31 years old. Left rear fender paint is peeling and rear hatch has rust along bottom of window opening. Good news is car came with a spare engine and another set of wheels and tires plus a couple of boxes of other parts I have yet to figure out. A little like Christmas!

First two issues to resolve are:

1. PO says clutch line blew near his house and clutch went to the floor. It is my understanding that the brakes share the same fluid which seems correct as the brake pedal is free travel to the fire wall. PO bought a new line from pelican parts. Any tips on bleeding would be bratly appreciated.

2. Engine turns over but is hard to start and dies when given gas unless you are pouring it in through the intake. Then she will rev up. Ideas on where I should start first? I already plan to replace all fuel lines!

Thanks for the help.
Jim

Be sure to find Mark Robinson at some point. I don't think he will be at the GTG Saturday as he runs the Dyno day for the local PCA and that is happening at the same time (and close by...so maybe we go over there if they are running after we are done w/ lunch)...he will be able to give you some GREAT tips on dealing w/ the clutch stuff for sure. Maybe on the engine issue too. Clearly it is a fuel thing though and I am guessing pump not running either because it is broken or a fuse or relay has died.

sounds like my car when I first got it, (78' had been sitting for 6 years.) If its been sitting, you can probably count on replacing both master and slave cylinders for the clutch, the brake master, because even if they actually work, they will die soon. ah and I just hit my warm up regulator with a hammer and starts good now

I also had to replace ALL the engine seals, which all started leaking after about 1000 miles.
I had to get a fuel pump n filter too

This was all because it had been sitting such a long time.
hope you have better luck!

Well, based on how long BLUE82 sat, I am guessing it has something to do with HOW and WHERE they sat... no problems like that at all with BLUE82 or Kermit AFAIK!

Welcome Jim you picked the right place to be if you own a 928!
Lots of info here to answer the smallest of issues you may have as well as great people willing to help.Looking forward to pics of the shark!
P.S. Sounds like fuel restriction somewhere,I would replace the fuel filter at least if the car was laid up for a while.

Ed,

He has even hooked up with the local Shark Society (***), so he is primed for the 928 fun!

CIS systems don't like to go long without running. It's a pretty good bet the CIS head will need rebuilding.

I only know about the later cars, but the clutch bleeding is a horrible job. I had to take the clutch master out of the car, angle it up, bleed from the slave upwards and it still took about 15 tries to get it free of air. They seem to trap bubbles very easily.

Fuel pump will be loud if its on its last legs, I'm not sure you can "rebuild" one. He might have ment the fuel distributor.
lets see the pix!

I've had success a couple times by reversing them to clear debris. Gotta be careful not to set yourself on fire, though.

Both of my OB's (78 &79) had sat for awhile before I got them. They both needed new master and slave cylinders for the clutch. I would suggest changing the soft line that runs between them, plus inspect/replace the blue hose. I also had the brake master cylinder go out on both of them shortly after getting them up and running.
I have not had much difficulty bleeding the clutch system. I have just filled the brake fluid, and worked the slave rod while loosening and tightening the bleed screw on the slave cylinder. Don't push the clutch peddle to the floor with the slave off the bell housing, as this could cause the slave to push out too far.

Both car also needed the CIS systems taken apart and cleaned to get them running. If it starts, but dies quickly, cleaning the system might help, but I would also look at the WUR and the vacuum hoses that go to it, as it could be a cold start issue.
