to do this check you need the car on 4 jackstands so the exhaust can be dropped a lift is better support the car on the 4 jack pads along the bottom of the rocker panels.
This job is well within the abilities of someone that knows their way around a tool box

This is really a good job to do yourself, because it is part of regular maintenance. You will find a ton of info here abuot how to do it, and it you need advice in the process it will be quick in coming. After you have done it once, you will find it easy to do from then on. And as MrMerlin has pointed out, even if that whine is the fuel pump, this is something you need to do. The main thing is making sure everything is safely set up before you crawl under the car!

Hello Jeff;

Valentine911 recently had some work done on his AT and I think he liked the work. Unfortunately the shop is in the Chicago subs so it would be a drive. PM him and get details. This may be an option however.

Jeff...........I think the guys really need to know where this hum is coming from before pointing you in the proper direction to fix it. Get under that car and find the hum!!!

+1 to checking the flex plate.

You can call Ricks in Champaign,IL. He specializes in Porsche and has experience working on the 928.

Thanks and I will call him, I hear the fuel pump, and I think it is the TT. Tony is coming over tomorrow to help hear the sound and placement. I am posting a pic of the linkage trouble that I had from another post. Thanks

Tony says that he hears nothing out of the ordinary. The car was idling high, so we took that into account. No deep rumblings.

This is the 86.5 I almost bought out in San Francisco (one of my many "almosts"). During the PPI, A. Bauer in Oakland, CA noted that they thought it was the torque tube. Heard the same sound. Also, and this is important--especially for thrust bearings--they said the Torque Converter was leaking ATF and needed either a new gasket, rebuild or replacement. That might be your whine.

Good luck and I hope to see this car in person one day :-)

Has anyone suggested the fuel pump?

Mine makes a sound that is normal for fuel pumps ... but when a critical ear is listening for "what now?", it comes out.

When the car is running, listen at the back of the car one the passenger side. You should see a cover just under the rear bumper - that is where the fuel pump is located on the 86.5

Cheers
Glenn

When you fill up the tank, does it go to full and near 22 gallons or so? The only reason I ask is I heard a whistle a week ago Saturday in a car I was test driving. I am pretty sure now it was the fuel pump (87 S4) and the tank wouldn't fill (collapsed fuel tank or missing vacuum on the tank or both) and I bet it was the fuel pump wheezing-trying to move fuel.

Mike , I was at 1/4 tank and filled up 13 gallons, read full. What is the reserve and would you recommend 89 or 92 octane?

Default Humming from underneath

Hello. Can someone tell me what this hum (see attached) might be? There are so many options on this post I wanted to attach a video to see if we can narrow it down to some options. Brand new fuel pump was installed two weeks ago. Thanks!

Vegasdan, welcome to Rennlist!

You'll need some minimum number of posts here before you can attach pictures. Instead, post your video file to youtube and put the link in your reply here.

Take a few minutes to cruise through the "new visitors" thread near the top of the front page. You'll find a ton of great advice, including some hints about posting that will help all of us help you. Among those hints is that you must include the year of your car in every post. Spring for Rennlist membership, and you can build a signature profile that gets attached to the end of every post. Put your critical info there and you won't have to manually type it into every post. There are other benefits too, all for less than seventy cents a month or so.
