Thanks Doc!. Colin, Jose said there were a few that needed to be replaced, He works in a German Salvage yard and he thinks that he can use 944 lifters. I need to do a search. I have in the past but it seemed to be different ideas on the use of them!

Clean out the allen hole on the bolt, dab it full of assembly lube, then insert the allen tool. The assembly lube will hold the bolt to the allen tool, assuming you carefully insert it thru the hole in the cam tower.

if the liube wont work then use a stick magnet put it on the tip of the tool then guide the tool into the head till the bolt goes in the hole then move the tool sideways the bolt will drop into the hole and the magnet will release from the bolt. Then fit your allen tool into the bolt

If you have a good allen tool, none of the tricks should be necessary. It will hold the bolt very nicely for carefully inserting into the hole without a magnet or lube.

There's a statement to run with....

Just about all done! Cam towers are on, timing belt is in along with all of the gaskets and seals from Roger. I ended up replacing all of the lifters. The ones I had were aftermarket. I was told by the PO that his father had done a lot of engine work so I quess he was telling the truth.

I just need to go to the dealer tomorrow and get a few more odds and ends and it should be done. I am also doing a Delco coversion with a 140 amp unit. It is a worked over unit to put out more power so it should work good. We'll see!

Dyno this week.

for a quick check take a .002 feeler gauge and see if it can be inserted along the edge of the cam tower to head surface. On the early cars there were gaskets that looked like the shape of an 8 that were placed on the lifter bore guides. if your engine had these then they should have been removed and the new updated tower gasket installed. the 8 gaskets are paper thin so they will almost blend in with the lifter bores.
You will know that they are still in place if there is clearance along the tower edges and the tower will usually leak oil into the V along its top edge BTDT

Well another day in 928 land. Went over tonight, changed the oil, put in the cam tower plugs that Roger got me. Thanks Roger! Buttoned her up and started the car. Having headers and being LOUD I was backing the car out of the driveway to move it behind the house to work on. Shut it down they stared yelling at me! I had a big fuel leak. I shut her down and pushed the car in. The fuel lines that run in tandem on the passenger side were shot! MORE MONEY! Ouch, so we hop in my mechanic's car and head over to his work. We pulled up the diagram and get the parts number.

On the way home I remembered that some lines came with the car but I hadn't installed yet. Well it was exactly what I needed. Yes. The 928 gods were in my corner on this one!

Saved me money but more importantly saved me a day waiting for parts!

Should be done tomorrow.

One problem but it might have been the cold start but it's 100 outside. Thecar was idleing high. Vacum leak? Have to check it out. Any idea's?

High idle is often a vac leak. Also could be the throttle is maladjusted or hung up.

Well I got the car back today. I had a header gasket that I blew out at the track. Most have got really hot! The car seemed the same on the bottom end but the top end if anything felt slower! There is also lifter noise and I drove the car a lot today!

After going to the exhaust shop, the car seemed more responsive. Jose didn't have his timing light so he timed the car by ear. There is no longer a high idle. The car seems to run fine but not very responsive on the top end.

Is this a timing issue?

With 85 Euro cams do I set timing to 79 spec and advance from there? I believe thats what I read from my searches.

Am I hurting the car with lifter noise? It isn't loud, but is a ticking sound!

I am bringing the car to a shop to have them dyno tune it at 6pm. Any helpful hints to tell the tuner?

Thanks

Stephen

Gentlemen,
My first post here and i think you will appreciate it. To remove the top bolts on the cam towers you need to fashion a sleeve out of plastic or laminated spiral cover type material. Notch the end sticking out so you can load the bolts like a rifle round. They all dropped in and it took me 20 minutes to do. About an hour to figure this out. If you need pics let me know and i will post them. Easy concept. My arms are tired.

Thanks to all my 928 bros out there, and much love from Texas.

Sounds like a great tip. Please share with pictures though. A picture is worth....
