Ran across a 1982 928 and seller is down to $800. Needless to say it is a project car!! Starts and runs, 5 spd manual that seems to shift well. Seller says he paid $2500 a6 months ago and intended to restore but has too many other projects.

78K miles on odometer (no idea if it is accurate of course), needs paint, will likely need all maintenance, a lot of interior work and god only knows what else. I am looking for a project car to restore with my son with the goal of turning it into a respectable daily driver (no show car plans). I thought that if I could negotiate this down to $500 I could always scrap it if I discovered it was too far gone.

Any experience selling to a salavage yard, what do they pay for one?

The trans along with a few other parts takes you above $800.
Pull the trigger.
You have Austin and DFW 928 experts to help else part-n-pull-it in your front yard.
Don't involve scrap yards.
Better yet, patch and drive. Early 5 speeds are fun. If its bad cosmetically, drive it at night.

Note: Replace lower balljoints with new steel carrier units if the original aluminum ones are still installed.

What are you waiting for? Buy the car. For $800 you could drive it like a rental car and throw it away if it breaks.

If you are talking about the white one with fugly carpet, the owner used to be posting on CL that it would need a new head gasket. My guess is the oil cooler is leaking into the radiator, but I never made it over to look at it.

 

Parts are often worth two or three times the value of the car.

With a parts car, you sell parts.
With a project car, you buy parts.

My view is that you need one of each, and I would not pick a project car that needed paint.

 

I make the offer for $500, and see what happens.....

One major catch (if it's the white one we are talking about), no title. Still maybe a good deal for parting out.

 

I have asked about the title and still waiting on a response. really not interested in tearing down a car to sell!

I did see the head gasket note in the CL ad and have asked why he thought that was an issue. Any unique issues with the 928 and a head gasket leak that I shoudl be leary of?

head gaskets are $84 each....a bit of a PITA to change....in theory you can do it in the car..but I would pull the engine to save headaches.....

 

I wouldn't part one out without a title either.
