Default SATURDAY From Hell....

God.....drove down to Boston this weekend....was staying at a hotel and got up Sat morning...was loading up the 928 and as I was dusting pollen off the car the door closed.....suddenly I hear a mecanical noise as the car locks its self up!....normally no problem...but the keys were sitting on the drivers seat! and my spare was in my overnight luggage..which I had just put into the car!!!........So I quickly called AAA and they said they would send out a truc to unlock the car....meanwhile the hotel sends out a guy with a set of tools and since the drivers door was not fully closed...but still locked....he threads the tool into the little opening and hooks my door lever....nothing still won't open.....so he removes his tools as the AAA guy arrives...the AAA guys pulls out the same tool only un like the hotel guy....who uses clear shims to protect the paint and weather stripping....this guy starts jamming his in and it starts tearing the weather stripping....I yell at him to stop!!!!....
He call AAA tells them to send out a locksmith since I won't let him use his tools...I had seen a Porsche dealer the day before arriving so I called them...they gave me Porsche roadside Service to call. I get a great woman there who infoms me that they help "in Warranty porsches" mine "86" is not...but she makes some calls and calls me back....saying that I will have to have the car Towed to a PORSCHE dealer and they can try and open it on monday.....I needed to be back here in VT by today.....she makes another call and calls me back saying she spoke to someone inside porsche service who said my car a locksmith should be able to pick it.....SO I'm given a number to call....which 3 plus hours have passed...I call and they send this guy out.....who proceeds to do what the other 2 had done.......I tell him that the car has locked down and even pulling the handle from inside has had no result...he goes well I was trying to save you money.....So I said...ok I thank you for that...but I was informed that they were sending out someone who could pick the tumblers....He said...no you can't pick the door tumblers....but he could open the hatch most likely.....so I said fine do that...I'll climb through grab the keys and turn off the alarm.....Well I step away for a minute with my girlfriend, bingo...hatch open.....Well HE PICKED IT WITH A DRILL!!!! Said when the weekend is over his company will be happy to install a new lock ...that will be $180.00..........I was glad to be able to drive home.....BUT I learned a big lesson....keep the spare key always outside the car no matter what.......And never ok something without a full explanation of what is going to happen....
Now that I've vented......please say this has happened to somone else!!...I feel like a fool!! and misery loves company...right now....lol

One of the rear quarter windows is the cheapest to break.

The "tool" for opening a 928 is a steel wire kind of shaped like a "?" You slide it down the outside of the door window and the loop goes under the glass and raises the door lock. Should be part of any pro set of door opening tools beyond the most basic ones.

Snap-On sells the master set to "qualified" mechanics, it is not listed in any of the catalogs.
With that, pick tools and a air bladder I have yet to find a car i could not get into with out damage.

That being said, I keep a spare key with out the plastic head in my billfold.

There is a way to get into your car that is fairly well known around here. Nobody talks about it, but typically they'll PM you the instructions... if they haven't already.

Sorry about your luck.

Since mysery loves company, I'll help you out. I was in Sebring for the Porsche club races a few years ago and was unloading the hatch after the long drive south. It was dark out, I was tired, etc.... I used the key to unlock the hatch and then put it inside the back of the car. After I grabbed the last of the luggage, I closed the hatch and saw the key staring at me through the rear window. Of course the doors were locked. It worked out better for me though. I only have the key and a leather fob on the key ring so I was able to snake it out between the hatch and the opening at the corner with a coat hanger but I was sweatin bullets for a bit. Sorry yours wasn't as easy.

I wonder why the car locked itself? I'd be looking into that as soon as possible.

I figured....that it seemed like I wasn't getting the "true"info from "the professionals" ....That what was done to my car was "HACKS" being touted as Professionals........

Damm I wish I had been near a computer and thought of that first.....
Now I'm going to have to purchase a new rear hatch lock set and either key it to the rest of the locks or just have a separate key for the hatch.....

I feel for ya. After having done something similar so long ago that I've blocked it from memory (but not in my 928) I've gotten into the habit of my car key existing in only four states: the ignition, my pocket, my hand, or the one place in the house keys go.
