Default New lights for old

I replaced the fog/driving lights today. The old ones weren't too bad but new ones look a lot sharper. Completed the look with new plastic trim pieces

I just noticed mine today, and they look like your "before" picture. What can one expect to pay for a new set, ballpark? I'm thinking about HID and H4 upgrades, and would love new lenses if not too insanely priced...

Very nice, what a huge improvement! How about taking a distance shot and showing/before afters so others can get the full affect.

I'm fortunate that my current lenses look really good. They definitely aren't cheap!

New 87+ foglamp lenses (928 631 951 02 left, 928 631 952 02 right) are on the order of $350 each. For what it's worth, I recently ordered a passenger side foglamp lens, but stupidly used the ROW part number, and the lens is not returnable Anyone that needs a new-in-factory-box ROW lens 928 631 952 00 in Europe let me know, I'll unload it for $275 plus actual cost shipping. If I'm reading the archives correctly these will fit on the U.S. spec cars but the position of the fog and driving lamps are reversed.

I bought new pair of light units for £280 (that's about $370) from an outfit called Frazerpart who I've used quite a few times. They often have new parts which have been cleared out by Porsche at excellent price, and tun a shop on eBay UK.

Had to go to Porsche dealer for the trim pieces. They cost me £12 a side ($18 a side).

Looking at PET, the light units sell in UK for $405 each including sales tax!

The light units are original Bosch. But as with my last S4 I noticed that whereas the original lights are "made in germany", the replacements are "made in Czech Republic"! Such is the modern world of outsourcing/multinationals.

Was posting about this project on UK owner's list (we were discussing best way of removing corroded bolts holding lens unit in - I found handheld impact driver does a great job). One guy discovered that his RHS light was a LHS inserted upside down, and has arranged swap with guy who discovered reverse problem! Don't you love POs...

For those playing at home, two problems cause the 'foggy foglight' symptom shown here. First is simple sandblasting of the glass covers. There was a post a while back about an owner who used a headlight- or windshield-restoration product to buff out the glass. Stoneguard plastic will reduce the damage on new parts.

Second cause is simple oxidation of the silvered reflectors. A VERY GENTLE cleaning with a non-corrosive cleaner might be OK, something like a non-ammonia window cleaner for instance with a very soft towel, minimum wiping. The reflectors are silver flashed, very thin coating, and wear through with just a hard look. I was thinking that maybe one of those "museum plate" things used for non-contact cleaning of fine silver collectibles might be something to try too.

You can carefully disassemble the reflectors from the lens mountings. The reflector holders are little plastic pieces that are somewhat delicate. If you get a little overzealous with the screwdriver on the adjusting screws, the plastic pieces will break. Folks replacing old with new would do well to scavenge those plastic bits for use later.
