Default Polishing Turbo Twist Rims

I have TT rim's on my car and I am thinking of removing the paint and polishing the aluminum. The rims are aluminum aren't they?

I know some will think it is to blingy but I have done it before ( on other cars)and love the look. Problem is it takes about 7hrs a wheel.

Yes they are aluminum, dont know if the metal beneath the paint is good enough to polish though.

I think they look sharp! Another unique thing that can be done by a LOT of elbo grease! Starting today. Need more stripper!

Well I have been working at these and it is a bitch to get the paint off and get down to the metal. After many hrs of work and a lot of stripper I am down to metal on all 4 wheels. I haven't started polishing yet just wet sanding now to get it as smooth as a baby's bottom. I have a lot of work left but here is where I am at.

I bought some polished twists from a guy who told me they were "mint". They looked mint in the pics. When they showed up there were definitely not "mint".

Polishing scratches all over the place. I think they look like crap, he insists they look great.

I'm still trying to decide what to do with them. Polish them up proper, paint them, sell them, or keep them as is and use them for track wheels.

When they are finished they should be like a mirror like in the how to thread posted in this one. I think when they are finished I will spray then with por 15 or clear. Something to protect them.

Yes, I didn't mean to sound so negative. I'm looking forward to seeing how yours turn out.

Thanks but I didn't take it that way. More like advice to protect them once they are done. I will have to figure that out but the paint shop told me por 15 would do the trick.

To bad the seller was untruthful. Would be sweet for the track!

This gives me something to play with!

Well I haven't had a ton of time to wet sand these day's with our move and getting settled in. I have put some hrs in here and there and this morning I spent a few hrs again. Getting close on one wheel. Still a lot of little pits that need to be smoothed out and the lips are a bitch! Here is a progress pic.

The low pressure cast wheels tend to have "pits" the aftermarket being worse than OEM. Once polished unless coated aluminum oxidizes very quickly. If you clear coat , the clear coat tends to yellow discolor over time and sometimes has a hard time sticking to the polished surface with no primer. Power tools are useful if you know what you are doing. Shops which polish wheels send them out and have them chemically stripped BEFORE they start grinding ! And the guys they employ make $8 per hour and at the end of the day are covered head to toe in black residue.

These wheels are OEM. Would hate to do a aftermarket set if they are harder to do.

Do you(JAMES) know anything about por 15?

There is a "chrome" powder coating that will give you the look you are after and save you from killing yourself polishing and then maintaining those wheels.

Thanks Fabio! Are those your pieces, they look nice. I will finish what I started but that is something I will look into when I get the motor and tranny finished.

Looks like heads are next, then some boost!
