Default How To Tell If Your Thermostat Is The Original. UPDATED

Hi Everyone,

Just removed the thermostat from my 1991 S4, to investigate what I think is overcooling. When debating with my (much better eye sighted) son whether we should replace it or not, he pointed out that the stat itself said "Made In West Germany" on it in tiny engraved letters!

He won the debate, as it seems that this the original?

Quick question, should you be able to see a small gap between the thermostat valve and its housing when cold? I can and I think this could be causing overcooling. I think I'm going to replace it anyway, but just wanted to know!

Cheers

I recently replaced the t-stat on my '85 because it barely ran over the first white line on the freeway (~75C). The t-stat was a 83C Wahler, with a Porsche mark opposite the 83C mark on the back. ('WAHLER MADE IN W-GERMANY' on the front.) I'm guessing it was original. The rear seal was missing most of the original rubber.

I replace the seal, and the t-stat with a new 83C Wahler, and it runs closer to the midpoint, now.

Bump for the question please!

I only recovered one seal from my thermostat today, I'll check the PET to see if I've left one in there and I haven't removed it!

The seal he reffered to is the one pressed into the back of the thermostat housing...hard plastic around the hole in ther back of the housing....Porsche added this seal around 1983 so that when the thrmostat opens the disc seals better and stops the bypass of coolant back to the block. Remember anything which moves tends to wear out over time and thermostats have parts that move....

to remove the rear thermostat seal ( it might not look like its even in the water bridge housing as the rubber lip may have worn off)
, get a screwdriver and tap the outer edge inwards this will collapse the seal onto itself and then it will fall out of its bore

I think I'm in the same position, so replacing it may bring similar results hopefully!

I'll take a look at that tomorrow, see if it needs replacing also!

UPDATE:

I have now ordered the rearward seal aswell. However when I went to remove the old one, all I found were the remnants of what must have been there before, around the rim it sits into which I subsequently scraped off. Otherwise, there was nothing in there at all, when I reached into the hole there was nothing I could feel except the aluminium of the water bridge.

Am I looking in the wrong place or something?

It could be worse. It could say "Made in East Germany".

Mine looked similar to that, but it just crumbled to bits when I tried to prise it out with a flatblade screwdriver!

Rawky here's that the old one should look like. It's a rubber coated metail ring.
