Default Bought a 928 that's been sitting ten years

Hello!

I've just bought a 928 -79(produced 1978) Euro 5spd, that's been sitting in a garage the last ten years. Before it was putted away it got all of its oils changed, all belts, and coolant. The engine has been started once every month, so except for cracked vacuume hoses that makes it idle high cold, the engine runs smooth.

Now, i'm thinking of rebuilding the front calipers(As they stick on), and getting plates on it. Any tips on what to do with the engine, and gearbox/car after been sitting ten years? Don't want to blow the head gasket, or ruin the engine...

I think it would be safe to redo the timing belt before you drive it - even though this doesn't seem to be an interference engine. I also think you should change all fluids. Normally, I would worry about old, varnished fluid, but you say it was run regularly - hopefully with relatively fresh fuel.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the tips Yeah, the timing belt is no.1 priority, though I'm not sure if I'll dare doing it by myself, or letting a workshop do the job.

I'm not sure if the S-spoliers are retrofitted or "original"(since the whole front fendre is S), but the engine and the car itself is non-s with the 4,5 K-jet. Haven't found any option stickers to confirm anything.

And one more question!

I have som "medalions"(well, sort of), one on the right side door, and one behind the gear stick. The one in the door says "Zu Neuen Zielen - Porsche, 1984" and the one in behind the stick just "Porsche - 1987". Isn't this kind of odd, in a car produced in 1978?!

Frankenporsche?

What color is that? Looks like purple.

Could be a conglomeration of parts from several cars. Most likely not an all original car. But you already know this.

Well yes, I suppose that it's kind of mixed up. The car was originaly white, but the whole car was repainted to purple(except for engine bay). Though I don't think it's been in any serious accidents, as the body seems fine except to small dents on each side of the rear fender. I don't have the VIN right here, but will post it as soon as i get home...

Might be worth checking out the engine number which is on the front of the block near the top radiaor hose....

Those are "s" wheels too. The early cars all had phone dials. Might be this is a frankenshark. Nothing wrong with that if it runs well and the price was good. Can't wait to see pics of it all cleaned up. How is the interior?

I'd just drain and refill gearbox; drain and refill oil and coolant, consider changing most/all coolant hoses in the process and drive it around carefully and begin sorting through it.

Have you got the right "title" to the car? I'd be checking that first.

With "Title", what do you mean about that? I've checked the plate infront of the engine and the VIN matches that one, but I haven't cheked the stamped VIN as it had so much dirt that I couldn't see it clearly.

Bought it for $4100, and think it's a fair price. The interior is in pretty good shape, and most of the electric stuff works(like window motors etc)

The odo says 125.000km, but I don't have anything to document that.(neither did the seller)

There you can also see the "medallion" behind the gear stick.

More pics:

Interior looks great.

As someone already mentioned, get the engine number as soon as possible. If the car has a history of having things changed on it you want to be certain that the engine is not switched for a later engine. Change the timing belt ASAP anyways.

I'll check it when I get home from easter holidays Right now I'm 30hours of driving away from my car, so just phoned my dad at home to get then VIN number. Within which numbers should the engine be to "match" the age?

Thanks for all the tips!!

And the questions keeps on coming:
I don't have a trip reset button - instead there is a switch for the rear foglight. How do I reset the trip, without the button?
