Ditto on the shifter, Ed.
I removed the stupid little shortshifter and replaced it with the real McCoy.
As if a shortshifter was going to facilitate fast shifting of this old box. Really.

It actually hi-tech: It's close to the steering wheel for very quick reach. Look at the Carrera GT or Panamera - their shifter ***** are in about the same place, only that they sit on higher consoles.
Having said that, the long travel would probably make me feel like I'm hand mixing dough for "Spätzle" (Swabian Pasta)...

Thirty two year old car with 14,000 miles, I pity the person that has to pay for and do all the work on all the crap that is going to break on that car if it ever hits the road again.

BLUE82 hardly needed ANYTHING and it had only 35XX miles on it and had been sitting for many years too... change of fluids, belts and hoses...I think it was about a $3500 service to change everything (including water pump) and the thing is just like a new car in every way.

I also think it has a lot to do with how the car was stored and WHERE.
They do not seem to fare very well in the humid south from what what I have seen.
I have a cousin that bought some special cars new over the years, stored them inside a climate controlled garage, some were ok after ten-fifteen years, some not.
He still made a fortune on them.

I think I have put 120 on it in 2 years... something like that... 3535 and now 3660... 3660 is right, I just can't remember what it said when it came off the truck... I have it written down in the log book for the car though. In fact EVERY MILE the car has driven is documented!
1/3rd of that was to and from its first Concours event a couple of months after I got the car.

I've had 6 low mileage 928s and one higher mileage GTS over the course of the last 15 years and I'll take a low mileage car over one with miles any day. Fixed more on the higher mileage one than all the others..... I'd rather pay to fix the little things that might go wrong (which btw has not been my experience....) b/c it's a lot harder and more expensive to fix worn and tired.

How long had they been sitting and how much have you driven them?
I do agree that wore out is wore out, but dry, seals on a AC compressor or the whole system costs just as much to repair as one that is worn out.
The same thing goes for many other parts on the car.
I would much rather have a car that I have been through like mine with 130,000 miles or unknown miles as many 928's are really unknown as far as mileage goes, yours are a exception I am sure.
This is just my outlook on cars, my labor cost me next to nothing, for others not so much.
I just do not want a car that has had spells of sitting for years on end and some short driving time in between.
It does seem to be working for you though, I just wonder how much you drive these low mileage cars.

I would rather have very low miles on an old car and 90% of those miles to have occurred in the year prior to my ownership!
I am with Chuck for the most part...repainting a tired high mileage car and replacing most all the interior components makes the mechanical work look CHEAP!!! These days I put more stock in nice paint and interior on a running 928 than on its ultimate mechanical condition. That is even MORE true for the early cars where a broke engine is not likely to cost an arm and a leg...

The 928 I have the most experience with would be my GTS. I bought it in 2000 with 8k miles on it and 10 year later it has 12.5k miles on it and knock wood I haven't had any issues at all b/c of it's low miles.
I do think you're right if the car sits for really long periods of time without being run. The likelihood of issues is much greater. All of my low mileage 928s were at least started and most driven regularly and I the only issue I've ever had is input shaft seals leaking. Maybe I've been lucky but, I will always opt for the low mileage car simply b/c it will likely have less wear and tear b/c of the miles. We recently bought (and sold) a 2005 SL55 that had just 400 miles on it. The car was like brand new and there were absolutely no issues with it in the year we had it. Maybe I've been lucky but it's made my mind up about low mileage cars.....
