I love my 928 and always will.
However after yesterday when Kevin was kind enough to let me run his wonderfully set-up 964 in a PCA HPDC, I have to say that the 'squirrely' tail-happy generalization that 911's have didn't seem to exist in this car.
Being a total newbie to a 911-bodied car, I was able to push it harder and harder each lap. At no time did I feel as though the ***-end was going to pass me. The feedback from this car was much more than I get with my GT. It seems to be considerably more nimble, and, contrary to what I had heard, very correctable.
I haven't yet had the opportunity to drive a comparably equipped 928 the way I drove that 964, but I plan to soon.
If a 928 even remotely resembles this 964 in the fun-factor, then I'll have a newly-found respect for the 928. I'm guessing that the 928's thrill factor is when you get a nice long straight where you can hear that V8 music as you pass what you were chasing in the turns.
Given that your 928 is an auto, I say no contest. Apples to oranges. Talk to Kevin about how to set up your 964 for a streetable DE car. If you aren't comfortable with a stick, there's certainly a learning curve for you. But when a stick is an option for a DE car, be it a 928 or a 964 the stick car is the no-brainer.
I envy your choices.
