930's are a different story...turbo lag was a concept many didn't get.

I think that the 928 communicates its displeasure in a more linear way than the 964 and is easier to save. But that's just me.

The high power , reliabilty ,and relative light weight of early 911s, 934 ,935s more than made up for the handling issues. Not the least of which was a locked rear axle since no Porsche limited slip at the time could survive....made them almost impossible to turn. So they would pitch it into a corner get it pointed the right direction and hammer the throttle with both rear tires spinning the same speed the car pretty much goes straight no matter where the front wheels are pointing ! I still see a lot of new turbo cars at D E being driven like that....real fast on the straights but tiptoe through the corners. Makes the 914 guys crazy as they have to follow them in the twisty bits only to have them blast off on the straights.

There's no doubt of that. That's what makes a 911 more fun at the track.

Here's a post from a 97 Targa driver that I met at my first DE at Road Atlanta while driving the 89 GT. After reading his description, I can honestly say it was more back for him and forth for me. My instructor was a 951 driver and seemed pretty impressed with the performance of the 928 on the track. The GT is a 5 speed though with the mods shown in my sig. I don't think I would have done nearly as well in one of the autos. I've never driven any 911 so I can't compare them myself but I can say the GT worked well for me at RA for my first DE and I was moved up to Group 2. Too bad I haven't been able to make it back since but soon, very soon.

Seriously....I think you should learn to drive them both on the track. I've had students switch vehicles on the same weekend.

Take the 928 first.

I had one more thought for you. Part of the joy of either car might depend on the track. A short track with a fair number of turns such as Lime Rock is probably more enjoyable in the 964. A longer track where horsepower pays great dividends (such as the uphill long back stretch including the esses at Watkins Glen) is definitely a great track for the 928. I have never driven Monticello if that's where you are going, so can't comment on it.
Have a great time, whichever steed you choose to ride.

How can you make the suggestion the 930 is a turd? They take skill to drive properly, that's the only offense. The basic concept of the 930 drove a lot of Porsche race cars to victory.

One never knows here-It's been my experience in the 928 world that many do not give the air-cooled P-cars the respect they deserve.

There is some reciprocation too, but both camps share the guilt. Those of us that straddled both sides are the true believers.

Not sure the statement 90/10 is any where close, assuming you mean that 90%of the maligning is done by the 911 camp.

That accusation would stand with one of Al Sharpton's when he accuses others of racism.

My problem with the 911 has always been the fact they are over priced for what they are.

If an older 911 could be had for around $5k I would have one. But when the 928 is around that and will out perform it with imo more comfort, there is no contest.

I also have both a 964...track toy, and a soon to be finished '91 GT

My plan, as a DE driver and also a 928 owner is to go out of my way to bring the 928 back into the light of day at track events...show up with one and let the 911 crew see more of them..

We had 928's show up at VIR in March..'89 GT driving and 2 '82 928's parked at the paddock.

Those who show up get the attention...better to be seen
