Default Cal smog getting very picky, or wrong day

Tail pipe sniffer passed, visual failed.

Not on my Euro S 928, which is next in line for a smog check, but on my essentially stock 91 5.0L LX Mustang. Two years ago after barely passing a smog check due to the old cats I put in a catted X pipe, and the cats both had proper EO#'s for a Mustang and the XFM30 was sold by Pypes as 50 state legal.

Visual failed because the factory H pipe uses two precats, and when the tech looked under the car he only found one cat per pipe and no precat. CARB EO# on the cats present was fine, but he wanted to see two more cats.

Right now I am still working on what to do next, but not looking forward to the test on the Euro S.

OTOH maybe it was just a BAD day for a smog check. A service tech was working on one of the test machines so two lanes were closed and all the techs were "milling" around my car. I've never seen so much flashlight and mirror snooping before.

Take it to a BUSY generic test station- they are not usually that picky....

May have thought you were an undercover BAR car. I used to get them periodically. They put cameras in very strategic places...

California smog testing has become much more picky over the last couple years. I dread every time it comes around. In fact, I registered one of my cars in Montana to avoid the hassles. All the fun has been taken away by CARB.

Good luck with the Euro.

Smog checks are a serious PITA...... my old daily driver failed visual once because the the flywheel was installed wrong, which read the wrong timing....but the car ran fine and passed the sniffer...so who CARES....CARB does big time...& it cost me nearly $300 to get it "corrected" and guess what...it never-ever failed the sniffer....before or after I "corrected" it

I don't miss having to do smog checks.....about the only good point of driving cars that are 6 years old or newer
