I disagree since you could say the same about almost any performance car.

Even the most reliable super / sports car suffers from massive depreciation. Cars like the Corvette, NSX, Supra, and even the Dodge Viper are dirt cheap compared to MSRP. Other cars like the 3000GT / Stealth are giveaway cars that can easily be made to produce over 400rwhp and still be a reliable daily driver. Local shop just finished up one making over 600. Total cost of that project (including the car) is less than your average GTS.

I’m seriously thinking about an NSX for a daily driver. Friend of mine bought a one owner for $21k over six years ago. To this day, nothing but 100% routine maintenance and it’s a part time track car (he did add an accusump).

The 928 could be the most bullet proof reliable car ever made, it’s still going to slot under the average 911 on the price scale. That’s just how it is in the Porsche world.

Hacker and Dr Bob hit it on the head. If you take the cost of our chosen "sport" and compare it to golf: (18 holes @ 50-$100 + clubs, clothes, CC dues or membership), bowling: (custom fitted ball, shoes, lane fees, shirts), Hunting: license, multiple rifles or bows, scopes, ammo, loaders, dog & food, clothes, tree stand, bait) Fishing:license, rods, reels, boat, motor, waders, flies, bait) Boating: depreciation, slip, docking, marine gas, props, repairs, maintainance, insurance, license plates and more) skiing: skis, bindings, passes, lift fees, clothes) snowmobiling, off-road vehicals, or whatever......add up the annual costs and see if you can get under a couple grand a year in cost$ and be able to use it almost everyday in good climates; or at worst 7-8 months in states such as Michigan like you can with your 928. And then say to yourself, how do you put a price on the grins per mile knowing you're driving an exotic supercar for less than the cost of Prius.
(Of course, if you also golf, hunt, ski, boat, fish, bowl, snomobile and off-road also......it really does not matter because you can afford it!)

I think everyone has something that others could ask you if it's worth it. I have lot of expensive hobbies that makes others look at me like I'm crazy. If it makes you happy it's worth it. If you dread looking at it every morning find something else in life that makes you happy.
I enjoy reading all the stories that people here share of their 928. Sure you get the posts that say they are ready to torch it, but you can usually find an answer to your problem if you are willing to try. Some people are not car guys and every problem that comes up they will say it's not worth it. If it is your hobby you wait for new challenges and approach them as an excuse for some good garage time.

Its about the hunt and the deciphering / reclaiming / repairing for me, so its a worthwhile hobby. I've got just over 25K in 4 running cars and can probably get out within a few weeks for around 17K or so. Not too bad. Its kept me entertained.

Hell no it's not worth it if you're in it for the money. Dumbest "investment" anyone could make. But throw in fun factor (driving, wrenching, whatever you enjoy) and then you can say if it's worth it or not. I'm definitely upside down in my car and I think it's worth it because I enjoy it. I don't have any other hobbies right now, stopped playing golf and other stuff, so I gotta have my fun somewhere. Right now it's a split between the 928 and the LeMons car and I'm having fun.

Well you all bring up some good points. I'm not asking if it's worth it as an investment or a hobby. You have already decided that cars are one of your hobbies and if it wasn't the 928 it would be something else. I think we all know that cars are a poor investment, hell everything is a poor investment these days!

So if I rephrase the question and ask, how does it compare against other cars you've considered or are considering. RKD you're initial reply does negate this because I'm asking people who have already voted with their wallet but I'm sure some have regrets, curious to know how many.

As a newcomer or an outsider looking in it does help to get an owners perspective.

Personally I have thought about selling the GT to buy something else but the minute I get serious about another car I find a huge amount of shortcomings that prevent me from pulling the trigger. Before really discovering the 928 I was hunting for a 993 because I thought it defined what I like. But after owning a 928 I find the 993 interior design and materials of construction lacking. I'm not a huge fan of the VW Beetle seating position (just seems really odd to me). I love everything else about the car. My only complaint about the 928 is that you really need to be moving fast to truly enjoy how capable it is. The roads around here (MA) don't really allow for it which means I need to either head to the track or drive for hours to have some fun.

I hope that makes sense.

Well, I think being so "focused" on the 928 is perhaps restricting me from considering other currently inexpensive cars with great potential for performance & luxury, such as the Lexus 400SC, various BMW's, whatever. V8 Mercedes. Am just not looking for value anywhere else, but its out there.

Also, I was considering shifting into Boxster recovery mode, but learned about their devious little random IMS brg failure and decided to pass. Deep engine work is not fun for me anymore.

My time is most important to me, my quality of life. What I enjoy to do. I love my 928 so the money spent is worth every penny. Same reason I work 15hrs a week. I would rather spend the time with my family, girls 5 and 3, than working. As long as the bills are paid, money saved for the future, life is good!

If I spend another 15k on my car I will have 20k into it and it will blow away any 20k car that I could buy. At least thats how I fell. I only have one life to live and I don't want to drive anything that doesn't make my heart beat a little faster!

Absolutely, Best & Most Beautiful GT Ever Made
That might be overstating it a little but not by much.

We haven't had that much trouble with ours, no more than some of the fishing boats we've owned and they can be very expensive to maintain just like a high performance car.

The bottom line is, they are a sheer joy to drive in every regard. I can still stand in the garage and marvel at the beautiful cars we are so lucky to own.

I may not always own a 928 but it will always be one of the most rewarding purchases I have ever made; cars or otherwise.

Someone told me once(although I'm still working out the details) that "You can't take it with you"... So, yes... it's worth it if you want to drive such a rare and marvelous piece of automotive engineering -

Plus, it's kinda fun to bitch about how much it cost you to keep this thing running!

Speaking as someone who has "lost" plenty of $$$ in the 928's that I used to own....... Do I regret owning them.....

NO

Could I have spent my $$$ much more wisely...sure hindsight is always 20-20... If I was super smart I would have taken all the money I dumped into both 928's (sharky and widow) and invested it....but where is the fun in that!!!

The question before us is, is it worth it. From a dollars and cents perspective probably not. I'll never get out the money I've put in. But that's just not the point of a 928.

I just thought of all of the great people I wouldn't have met and the friends I wouldn't have made if I didn't own a 928. They're worth every penny.

The thrills, the emotions, the experiences, the looks, the comments that I would not had without it.
The people I now know because of ownership.
The cost has been well worth it.
