How do you rate your 928's reliability?

18 years on the '82 and 6 years on the '88 lots of $ and time and TLC, "therapy" nonetheless ...never problems or stranded on my usual long trips from and back to NY...ahh, the love they show me. I'll say solid 10 & 10 ;I'm ok with the slight old car pains as we go along "I LOVE MY GIRLS"

During the first 5 years I would say it was a 4 or 5. The last 5 years its been a 10. But I had TBF. With as much as I've replaced on her, it better be a 10.

Planning to do the same
I've had my 84 10 years, put almost 250k miles on the beast, and it's been pretty darn reliable largely due to driving it virtually every day. I've put parts in it, sure... mostly consumables. 25 years old, ton of miles, driven hard and put up wet often, and I just got back from a 1500 mile round trip SanFran/Phoenix. Put gas in it and motored 12 hrs each way. I think most of the reliability issues are due to sitting for long periods, you gotta drive the **** out of 'em. Often.
Just did a Houston Dallas roundtrip 600 miles and this week it will be a Houston Phoenix roundtrip....

I try to keep mine in condition good enough to jump in, drive to the other coast and back, with no concerns. That doesn't mean there isn't a list of stuff to do at any time, just means it's been reliable. So far.

Other than basic maintenance performed in my driveway or a friend's shop, an occasional resolvable issue (see recent post on alternator belt tension) and one engine replacement due to my bad judgement of someone's capabilities to perform top end refresh without causing catastrophic failure, my 928 has been quite reliable.

My 88 and 89 S4's were very reliable under my watch and each saw a flatbed once during my ownership. The 88 is still on the road under new and dedicated ownership and the 89 was wrecked by its new owner within a few months of me selling it to him. To put it in perspective my relatively new (at the time) Audi S4 saw a flatbed once as well and didn't have NEARLY the mileage either of my 928's.
So I put em at an 9.

Their body and drivetrains and suspensions seem solid enough to deliver far more service than anything else I'm used to seeing.
I'm buying them at the point where the wear parts and electrical connections and rubber bits have reached the end of their first life and need refresh.
Lots of the how-to threads discuss the disassembly and reassembly during refresh. Because there is much crammed into these cars working on them is a big interactive puzzle. Because they are 20+ years old in most cases, others before us have sometimes taken shortcuts that also need to be deciphered and reversed.
So, regarding the reliability question, I'd give them a 0 to 4 if unsorted and an 7 to 9 once functionally refreshed.

I had LH brain failure at 12 years (which took me 5 minutes to diagnose and 30 minute for Marc Thomas to bring me a replacement). Other than that, nothing notable. I'd say that's a 10 for a 20 year old car with 217K miles.
