Well, the 917 is a nine seventeen. So, mine's a nine twenty-eight. But whatever, it's your car call it what you want. I think 'money pit' is probably the most common nickname.

if you look the original porsche commercials on you tube, they call it, the nine-twenty-eight

 

in zee fazerland all models would be pronounced as the 9-17:
9-28 (nine twenty-eight) , 9-11, 3-56, 9-44 or 9-14 etc.

shorthand would be 28'er or 11'er
longhand would be neunhundertachtundzwanzig (ninehundred twenty eight)

The 90X models would all be pronounced ninehundred X, e.g. ninehundred eight for the 908

I think everyone I know calls the 911 "nine eleven", so it makes sense that it's nine twenty eight

 

I like to call my car the time vampire. I spend so many hours getting **** to work correctly... Money vampire works too, for obvious reasons

Nine Eleven is called such because it's neun elf easy on the other hand nine twenty eight is a mouth full in German so it's easier to say Nine two eight, neun zwei acht. Rolls off the tongue nicer. So for me it will always be nine two eight because that's what the Fatherland demands lol

 

Screwing off in Munich last weekend and sat with 3 Germans at the Hofbrau House. We were talking about cars we owned and when I said Porsche neun achtundzwanzig they didn’t understand. But when I said nuen zwei acht they did. It was funny – they then asked how I afford the gas. Anyway, wondering if it has something to do with Germans saying numbers in a series of two--like when they say their phone number and two digit numbers are really backwards. Like twenty eight is really eight and (und) twenty. Don't know, but this much I do know, German is a very hard language to learn. Formal, informal, die, das, der (gender), etc.

The real question should be, is it Neun zwanzig acht OR Neun zwei acht ?

 

My newest car was dubbed "The Zombie" by my youngest as it should be dead but isn't. Luckily all those spares are coming off the shelves so lots of time but not much money going into it.

"Nine twenty-eight" which goes with "nine eleven," "nine fourteen," "three fifty-six" and the rest.

"Type nine two eight" for the true purist.

I've had the same experience when speaking with native German speakers. Nine twenty eight just left blank stare but they all knew what a nine two eight was though. Very funny. Deutsch is crazy, I already speak Spanish so formal/informal no problem it's that dang case system that kills me.
