y connector and safety
I recently discovered my y connector in the front pas. wheel well to be broken. Is there any harm in driving the car until I get a new one?
Also what is the function of these lines leading to the charcoal canister - I presume something to do with dealing with vapors.
Thanks,
Dave

Yes - it routes the gas vapors thru the charcoal canister. You won't hurt the car by driving it, but your garage will stink like gas, and it isn't much good for the atmosphere. Not sure if there is an effect on performance, akin to a vac leak, but others can answer that. Most cars either have or had a broken y connector. Nicole (Hooked on Cars) sells a stainless one that will last forever, and it is only a few bucks iirc.

There's the smell and the fire hazard when parked. The factory part is less than $5 from your regular suppliers, comes in a next-day envelope. Nicole has the metal piece that will never break, for some extra dollars. I replaced mine with new original when I bought the car, and did a better job of supporting the hoses with some tie-wraps, no problems since. See the attached write-up.

Dr Bob, thanks for the write up. I will have a look through it...much appreciated.
Only reason I ask if I can drive it is because the Mrs. actually ASKED for a ride in the 928 today...hell may have in fact frozen over...figures I find a potentially dangerous issue to deal with.
Cheers,
Dave

Very common problem. The S/S Y-Connector is a great solution.
Those vapors can also make there way into the cabin when you're driving at slower speeds which can make for a bad driving experience.

Thank you
Awesome write up! I believe I have the same issue and will need to Troy me shoot. What are your thoughts on the plastic vs. Metal Y connector?

pure economics. If you are going to keep the car for 30 years, then get the stainless. Otherwise, the plastic from the factory worked fine for years before it broke, and a new one from Porsche will also last for years.

I have replaced mine on both cars with the plastic one only to have it eventually break again so this time I got the S/S Y connector from Roger which is also recommended by my trusted mechanic, Once and done...
