Tire Options
I need to replace my tires soon. I have 7.5"x17" and 9"x17" turbo twists on the '90 GT now. I am looking for a good price/performance tire, strictly for street non-snow driving (only good weather winter driving if at all).
Anyone tried the Hankook Ventus? It has some decent reviews at Tire Rack: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....4&autoModClar=
Second consideration there would be Sumitomo HTR Z III http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....4&autoModClar=

I researched tires for a very long time before mounting Hankook Ventus V12 evo's. No matter where I searched they kept coming back as the best performance/price option.
I went to the Lemons race at Infineon and was surprised to see many teams with these tires on wheels stacked to the side. I asked a few teams what they were for "they're our rain tires." Though one team was running them as their regular dry track tires. They told me there was no difference in time between them so they were running the V12 for the entire race. They also seem to wear well.
Call "Damon" here on Rlist. He works for Tire Rack and though he won't get you a better than the web price, he is full of knowledge and understands our 928's.

Nexen 3000
I recently bought two Nexen 3000 235/40R/17 for $150 shipped. My car already had Nexen 3000 255's on the rear, so I wanted to keep them the same brand on the front. They are very nice tires and the reviews I read about them were good. My rim sizes are the same as yours. Just MHO for what its worth.

After reading posts here and elsewhere, I decided to put a set of General Exclaim UHPs on my S4 about a year and a half ago. I've since put on about 2200 miles. (I know, I know... )
They perform well and I have not had any problems with drift, excessive wear, road noise, wet weather, etc. I vaguely recall seeing a post or two concerned with sidewall stiffness, but that hasn't been an issue with me. I'm very happy with the decision and would replace them with another set of the same if I needed new tires.

I have the Michelin Pliot A/S Sport Plus. Really like them Do well in the rain and light snow and ride quietly on the road. 40,000 mile treadwear rating seems to be a plus and they only break loose if you really go hard into a corner or push it very hard beyond normal everyday type of hard driving.
You won't win any Autocrosses with them but most of my driving is back and forth to work and I foudn them to be the ideal tire for that. I don't have to get nervous if it snows or rains because I know my tires have a tread/compound that can deal with wet and cold.

I just put a set of Firestone "Wide Ovals" on my car- reasonably priced, much better tire than I expected. They are VERY sticky, wet or dry, make no noise, very smooth ride, and took little weight to balance. I had Michelins on the car that were scary by the time I replaced them.
I picked them because they were the least expensive in the sizes I needed (265 and 285-17's), and so far, I am pleasantly surprised!
Damon at Tire Rack is the man to ask...

Burning Brakes
(I posted this over in the Reutterwerke forum & figured I'd repeat it here for Bridgestone fans.)
Heads Up for Costco members: they're carrying Bridgestone again - & they're on sale!
I got my current RE050A PP's from them about 4 years ago (& S03's before that) - very happy with Bridgestnes (but now due for replacement) so I'm about to order a set of RE11's. Costco quoted me a price that was $6 less per tire than Tire Rack - but I'll have to pay sales tax (which in CA is pushing 10%) - on the other hand if I buy from the Tire Rack I'd have to pay shipping - so, the deal clincher is that Costco has a $70 off deal on a set of four Bridgestones through April 3rd.
Four 225/R50/16 RE11's, mounted balanced & out the door for ~$660. Same tires from Tire Rack (assuming I could get them mounted and balanced for Costco's $15 mounting & balancing charge) would be ~$730. Advantage Costco (of course, without the $70 off deal, it would be a wash).

same task/size I'm getting ready to address - what I'm leaning toward, if you don't mind mixing brands
these Toyo's for the front are CHEAP!

have heard good feedback for these Raptor rears

Nice, didn't know they came in 928 sizes. Grabbed some Wide Oval's recently for my wife's car 235x35x17 all round, and been very happy with them. Great in the wet (better than the HTRZ III I have on one of my 928's), quiet and grippy.
I might need to buy some new tires for a set of CIII rims I just got (the widebody kind with 11 inch rears), so this is a very timely thread.

For the more practical approach, allowing me to drive in colder temperatures, perhaps I should consider one of the following, anyone with thoughts, please pass them on
Kumho Ecsta ASX - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....4&autoModClar=
or
Yokohama AVID W4s - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....4&autoModClar=
or
Goodyear Eagle GT - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....4&autoModClar=
