There use to be a site for 928's that was called something like "What is it" and it had many photos of under the hood and all the parts numbered and explanations of what those parts were... anyone remember or have a link for that?

I just found a hose hanging from somewhere below the drivers side headlight(on my '79) into the wheel well that just ends there - like it was torn off or something.... it's about 3 inched in diameter... any ideas?

That's the cooling hose for your alternator. It goes to the alternator shroud and should also have the outside temp sensor in it, without which your HVAC won't work right.

p.s. Based on your avatar I'd have expected your car to have one in each fenderwell.
