4th or 5th (or whatever) Air & Space and Udvar Hazy.
National Gallery of Art.
just south of Alexandria is Mt. Vernon, George Washington's home on the Potomac.
take the tour, very interesting.
if you want to see the capitol building you have to line up *early*. if you don't tour the building, at least walk to it to check out the Civil War memorial statues.

If your grandson likes military stuff, and you've already driven into VA, you may want to consider taking the hour or less drive from Udvar Hazy to the Marine Corps Museum, near Quantico. It, too, is excellent! We visited shortly after my oldest son decided to join the Marines, and its a very well done museum. Its right on Rt95, for easy access back into DC. Or maybe worked into your route between DC and Atlanta.

Wally, my son is stationed at the Marine Barracks (oldest post in the Corps) at 8th and I St. If you see a white 928s4 driving around with Florida tags it is him. Definitely visit the Marine Corps Museum!
