should I change oil pan screen to GTS style
I am re-building a 83 Euro 4.7 and was thinking of doing away with the screen in the pan and rubber oil pick up tube and going with the later style. Any thoughts?
Thanks

LEAVE IT......it is far better than the later designs...... heres my experience.....I blew up a race S4 with the stock setup......I blew up the 84 lemons racer with the stock S4 style setup......I retrograded to an early oil pan with plastic baffle, mesh screen etc.....& guess what......IT SURVIVED 18 hours on track with no problems.................................. On a street 928 it really doesn't matter....but if you plan on track driving.....then leave it for sure

I blew up my '80 Euro with the older style and then switched to a later pick-up and I-J baffle set. Why the later pick-up? Because it has a screen on the bottom.
I didn't like the early set-up as the front of the plastic "clover leaf" will get expose to air under acceleration and that has to hit the pump eventually. I do like the early screen cover more than the "GTS" baffle or nothing.

Tell you what Brad. We'll pull my car into your shop and drop the oil pan, push it off and pull yours. . . and we can swap pans. I believe the earlier pan and baffel is far superior to the GTS piece of tin.
PS. . . See you tomorrow.

That'd be someone musing out loud. (and might have been me.)
If the early model was better they'd have put it back after rod bearings started failing on street cars.
I like the later pickup because it'd keep chunks out of the oil pump and cooler. I'm kind of a fatalist, I suppose.
