Here is a kit offered for the replica Cobra crowd that uses a Toyota MR2 power steering pump:

These pumps are easily found for $100 or so in the states in junkyards, no reason why it wouldn't work for a 928.

There may or not be a revised power steering rack in the works.
Would be nice to get a bit more power assist, maybe even speed sensitive.
I may just be dreaming though.

I have a MR2 setup here that I am planning on installing on my Audi if you need any info from it. When I was looking at modifying my Audi setup, the MR2 pump seemed to be the most reliable option.
It has a simple "PLC" that modulates pump voltage dependent on speed, and has activation switches attached to a cam on the steering wheel. If the steering wheel was turned and bumped the micro-switch, then it would activate the pump, voltage going to the pump was determined by wheel speed. So, the pump never runs when the wheel is relatively strait. I was going to modify the system: keeping the activations switch idea, but install a 30amp PWM controller to adjust the pump speed, giving me complete control of the amount of assist. I never really thought about adapting it on the 928 because I always liked the steering.

Here is a quick little "how to" using the Toyota pump. Looks like it can be configured a few different ways based on speed input and steering. It can be set to shut down when traveling in a straight line
