'84 928 vs '86 944 turbo
Looking at a '84 928 with 54,000 miles and a '86 944 turbo with 80,000 miles , close to the same price.
Which one is going to be best performance, reliability, one to hold it value, maintenance cost etc...

You really should drive each one if you have not, and decide which you like best, and do the research on what's been maintained on each of these vehicles, and PPI. You will get slanted opinions in the 928 forum as you will in the 944 forum..... There are too many variables to answer your questions, and how you intend to drive and use your vehicle....

I own a '86 944 n/a since new with 70k miles on it. I tend to baby it. Im not about racing (espacially in a n/a) or riceing them up to where they look like a Supra or 300z.
I know more about 944's The 928 is more of a GT car. Im not fond of automatics. Porsche doesnt make great automatics (back then).

Its so funny I was just reading an artical in Porsche Excellence about this. They were comparing the 928s4 "1988" to a 944 Turbo. The turbo was faster 0-60 stick (5.5 sec) 928 auto (6.0). They favored the 928 for handling. They had the winner as the 928.
However, that was an 88 S4 not an 84 S. Both have very similar hp output. I would think fit and finish, and engineering would be the 928, all out fun would be the 944 turbo. Lets face it the 944 was about 30K and the 928 was in the 50's.
Both cars are reliable if taken care of. Retaining value? Both are priced low enough that that doesn't really matter anymore. Maintenance? I have heard from techs that both are not cheap.
It would be up to you. I have driven both and own a 928. The 944 was a blast but for me I liked the growl of the V8 and I enjoy just cruising in the plush leather seats.
Hell get both if you can!

The 928 was built to be the top of the line and the 944 to be entry level. Of course it will be fun, it's a Porsche, but it's like asking if a "CLK" class is on par with a "CL" class, a 3 series on par with an 8 series, a TT on par with an R8. No contest IMHO. The 928 is a insane bargain today, but it's still 100% super car. I've owned some nice rides and nothing ever stirred my soul like owning a 928.

I had a good response all typed up but decided to drop it or I'll end up defending 944's in this thread and 928's in the other thread started by Kevsporsche944
As for the entry level comment......944's suffer from the same cracked dash and falling apart steering wheel as 928 interiors
With some new leather and a lot of work, they look quite nice:

IMO the #1 advantage to a 944 Turbo is the ability to have over 300rwhp in a car that weighs around 3,000lbs for not much money.
Stock for stock assuming everything is working correctly on both cars, the 944 turbo should be faster in every category over an 84 US spec 928.

I always liked the interior design of the +86 MY. The body doesn't work for me nor the lack of a V8.

Who cares about a V8 if it has less power and torque? It reminds me of those guys that say they have a Hemi; wow that's great. If it was a choice between a US '84 928 and a 951, I would go with the 951. A couple of bucks and it is faster than an S4.
You should look for an '85 - '86 928S 5-speed, which are very similar in price to an '84. Those are 32-valve and with a ~$100 chip make 300rwhp. I would choose one of those over a 951 any day.

The 84 928 is hard pressed to beat a N A 944 on a race track...the Turbo will run away and never be seen again..... The turbo 944 will give an S-4 a run and on tight short track probably probably be quicker. The V-8 may SOUND great but it is no match for BOOST !

same driver, same track, same mods, the S4 will stomp on the 944T. maybe not in an autoX, but on full size tracks Average HP my friend!
I also spend a LOT of track days running against the 944ts with a lot more HP. just ask the owner of Rennsport about our battles back in the day, when all I did was bolt on a euro intake 944NA, has not a chance in heck! thats spec miata speed.
want proof. my 79, the weakest of all the 928s, ran 2:10 at thunderhill. see how many NA 944s have run this fast.
we are talking just gutting the car and the usual bolt on mods. (i.e. headers,wheels/tires, cheapo suspension, etc)
Now, 944T vs 84 928S, the edge goes to the 944T, because you can just turn up the boost and get some crazy HP. I think the V8 would be the advantage, as well as handling and the wide stance. For the street, the 928 is the nicer car, but if it is nice condition. However, we all know of the things that might cost big bucks to replace, if not working well. the 944T might be more economical to restore, still really fast, lighter and more nimble, but smaller.
