Default Stongard headlight protectant on eBay

For those who want to protect their headlights, I just saw an eBay listing of Stongard (no longer available) for headlights 8" (only, I think). It appears to be for European headlights (no holes for the dimples on H-5's, but of course they could be cut out with a hole punch). Price is a fabulous bargain at $24.99 plus shipping of $8. 10 sets for sale, the listing states.
I have no connection with the seller, or the items, except I've been a satisfied user of Stongard protectant for at least 8 years.

Here's the link http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/STONG...item35a7aeb83b

If that doesn't work, just search eBay motors for: Stongard Porsche 928

There are newer options.

This place used my car to design a complete front end protection package for my replica cobra:

The invisiGard film is virtually indestructable.

They also sell headlight protection kits, 928 is listed for $50 which does include the fog lights.

Do any of the sources have a full front end pre-cut kit for the 78-86 / 87-95 MY's?

Same question as Dan. I hear they did some for people attending the big 928 gathering a few months back. Wonder if they kept a template? I bet Roger (928sRus) would know.

Dan and Nicholas,

If you want a kit, you might contact the seller of these Stongards. As I looked at their picture, it looked like both the headlight and 87-95 fog/driving light cover might be shown. I bought my first set of Stongards in about '02 from 928 Specialists, and got the full set. I've also bought some Lamin-X and cut the correct sizes for both headlights and fog/driving lights for the second car - when Stongards were no longer available. No "stone" problems with either, but it seemed the Stongard may be a bit thicker.

Warning - however - a friend put higher wattage bulbs in his fog lights, and ended up with a cracked lens. Stongard indicated high heat would do that with their product covering the light.

I found a 3M product a few years ago for this job - enough for 2 x 8" lights, and the spots & fogs in a rectangular sheet. Its probably 1/16" thick, and if the edge is carefully cut its invisible from a couple of feet away.

Followup on the original Ebay ad. I have a set of H4's to go on the car and thought it would be good to have protection for them. Ordered a pair and they accidentally shipped some 356 headlight shields. Apparently Stongard had the same part # for 356 and 928 headlights.... The seller was very apologetic and reimbursed for the return shipping no questions asked. But apparently there are no more Stongard shields unless there's old stock elsewhere.

Just an FYI. The 3M material (or at least similar) can easily be purchased online through several vendors by the foot (or on a pre-cut role). I bought a big role of it a while back and have used it to cover several items on my SAAB (mirrors, front bumper parts, hood) and it has held up as promised.....2 years now with no problems. Make sure you are buying a product specifically made to resist UV break-down.

I don't recall the thickness I bought or the brand (it isn't 3M, however). The material is not expensive relative to the cost of pre-cut material. It is an easy application, as these headlamps are a simple 7"-8" diameter disc applied to a perfectly flat surface (less a couple edge projections).

You use a mixture of alcohol and de-mineralized water (20%/80%) in a spray bottle to apply. Clean your surface well and wipe away the wax, spray again to coat the surface, peel, spray the adhesion surface of the material, and then place gently onto the wet/soaked surface. The wet surface affords you an opportunity for placement before pressing it into place once you have it where you want it. From there it's a matter of pressing from the center outward to work out the H2O/alcohol mixture. Once you've done that, turn on the lamps to warm things up a bit to ensure good adhesion. Pay attention to the edges and make sure that they do not extend beyond the edges as this will be a source for future loss of adhesion, dirt, etc.

What is the current know-how (source) for protective film to put on the outside glass?

I fitted some 3m stuff on my headlights nearly 9 years ago now, and still cant tell its there unless you really look for it. This came in a piece just wide enough for the 8" Euro lenses, and around 30" long from a auto parts shop. I got the two headlights and all the spot/driving lights out of it. its around 1/16" thick, and its a peel of the backing and apply process. It needs a VERY sharp blade to cut cleanly and neatly.

Herman - I purchased a set from X-Pel recently for my new driving lights. I put them on the main headlights as well, even though they had a few chips in them. The set had a nice thickness and was easy to install. Mine were a little cloudy in spots for a few weeks afterward but have since cleared up. Very pleased and would purchase again.

Yes, perfect fit with the proper cutouts - no trimming necessary. I briefly had the turn signal film installed, however, I took it off as it was impossible to get the air bubbles out from under the raised lettering (DOT) on them. The lamps have a smooth surface so this is not an issue there.
