Yes, if your ***** are blue you definitely have a problem.

Speaking of axle nuts, how do you torque them?
IIRC they need 339 ft lbs and I can find a torque wrench (3/4" or 1/2") that goes that high?

Cheers,

I get them to about 290 with the torque wrench I have, then set a 50 lb bag of lime on its edge on my cheater bar about 6.5 feet from the axle nut. Not pretty but it works.

Most folks say they get them to about 300 and drive them to a heavy equipment maint. shop for the rest.

Ask Bill Ball https://rennlist.com/forums/6516212-post17.html

There is a monster wrench in that post several pictures down!

You will need a 3/4 inch drive torque wrench, however, if you know that the wheels have been torqued up the the 330ft/lbs previously, you can centre punch the axle and directly opposite, centre pop the nut, get a 3/4" square T handle and a long piece of pipe and your are in business.

When you reinstall the half shafts and tighten the nuts up to the centre pop marks and if you have a friendly motor mechanic with a large torque wrench take the car along and get the torque checked. I have done this a few time and when the nut has been torqued up the pop marks have line up.

Just in case anyone is interested, I have about 10 spare axles if someone wants a set to rebuild in advance of removing their old ones... cuts down on the time your car is out of commission. Just swap the rebuilt ones on and you're off. $20 each + shipping.

I had my half shafts swapped side to side a while ago. The mechanic said this exposes the unworn side of the bearings. Seems to have worked like a charm.

Bill, tag a set for me please that seems to have a decent set of outers.

If you have the fine-toothed ABS geared ones for the 85/6, that would be best.
Larger toothed later ones are ok too.

Thanks!

*how far will old lint go, boss?*

Time to work harder and get a CAP award at work to fund this adventure before CA Emissions time.
If they're bolted at both ends you can just remove all the bolts and pull out the axle- no hub removal issues.
The way they leaked you may be able to avoid repacking them too. Just replace the gaskets and add grease. Blasphemy, I know, but repacking CV's is a nasty job.

By a replacement pump for a parts washer at Northern for $28. Rig-up a mineral sprits washer to flush the joints.

PM'd you earlier, but I need a set for an '87. I can come over and pick them up, no need to ship.
