Default 1973 Lotus Europa TCS for trade or? - $15000 (Corpus Christi)

http://corpuschristi.craigslist.org/cto/1605773884.html

Looking to trade for a 928......

Interesting...Needs a bit of work, and parts would be?????

I would never give up my only 928, but if I had two..maybe.

His asking price is way high, and it needs more than a bit of work. Maybe half of his asking price, depending on what has been done and needs doing. Parts are generally available with a few exceptions. It's probably worth 15 K in perfect shape. It is the exact opposite of a 928. BTW, I have owned and maintained a Lotus Elan for 35 years and still drive it regularly in addition to my 928.

I have always had a soft spot for a twin cam Europa. But this one is not worth 15K. I have about a 15 mile each way rural commute and always visualized the Europa or Elan for that matter as an economical really fun way to get to and from work.

Ahh - I always thought (and still do) that the Europa was Lotus' uglist car ever - I like almost all the others to varing degrees... No comparison to the looks of a 928 - the look hasn't aged well either.

Is it just the picture or is it slightly sagging in the middle? Looks kinda like a 914.

My Elan weighs about 1520 lbs, the Europa is probably 1575 lbs. Extremely lightweight, very nimble, perfectly balanced, fiberglass body on a formula car chassis. Colin Chapman's idea for Lotus was to "simplify, and add lightness" so that might explain why I think they are exact opposites. The Europa is very tight inside, your shoulder will hit the door when closed, you cannot drive with tennis shoes as the soles are too wide and you'll hit two pedals at once. Next to an 18 wheel truck, your head will be just over middle of the wheel hub high. It is perfect for windy back roads. It isn't really geared for high speed cruising.

I had a 73 for a short while. First full year of the twin cam engine. Always have the same elec troubles, and the carbs are a challenge to keep in tune. Since it's so light, the body panels all start to crack at the corners. You can't ever lay enough glass in there to keep it from cracking.

This one is worth about 2-4k if it runs. It'll take $15k to put it right, and then will be worth just under $20k.

The Elans and Europa TC's were potent cars in their day. The Elans vied for top honors in B production against 289 Cobra's in the late 60's. Raw power vs incredible braking and handling.

Almost bought one of these back in the 80's. Drove it for two weeks (central NY, not a lot of twisties - just a few to show what this thing is about) and really liked it. As already pointed out, very nimble go-kart, fun car, certainly no 928 but fills a different niche. And Alan, gotta agree, ugliest thing Lotus ever did. But it can grow on you... Right after I said "no" a gearbox/diff case broke (don't remember) and I heard it was some $ to fix.

I was thinking an extra "0" had been added and they REALLY meant $1500! $15000 is asinine! That is a total HEAP and EVER SINGLE part of it will need to be rebuilt! There isn't one bit of that car that is "good" the way it is now! That person should take a quarter and go buy a CLUE!

I've had several Europas in my life, and they are incredibly fun cars if...

You don't weigh much and you aren't very wide.

You have size eight or smaller feet, and don't mind driving without shoes.

You are under maybe 5' 8" at the most.

Understand that you are riding around in a light- bulb with absolutely no crash protection

don't mind $hundreds per month in parts costs if you plan to actually drive it.

Amazingly nimble, practical top speed less than 100, never plan to take it any distance.

Pretty much the opposite of a 928.

A Europa went to new home to make garage space for my 928, BTW.
