That is the Warm Up Regulator (known an WUR). It tweaks the control pressure to your CIS fuel distributor. If it isn't working correctly, you will have trouble with cold starts (and more).

You'll find some good info here: www.landsharkoz.com/images/pdf/wurfix.pdf

Looks like fire extinguisher discharge!

Just kidding, you are gonna have a hard time finding anything in there w/out a good cleaning. Hoses are a little dry by the way

Hi Cogsy, thats an amazing sight , the English winter has been a harsh one this season with plenty of grit ( salt) used on the roads and the salt has had a field day with the alloy bits .
I see the cylinder bank 1 -4 cambelt top outer cover off , does the cambelt still turn the one cam gear visible when the engine is cranked over with the starter motor ? , the reason I asked is there is a spray of white alloy oxide powder over the cambelt , as if it has not moved when the engine was cranked leading up to the photo ?,and there looks as if there is a fragment of cambelt reinforcement fibre sitting on top of the rad cowl just in front of the air intake tube , hope its not the case but easy to check.

Regards
BB

Salt or cleaning with a phosphate based cleaner will do this type of corrosion. I would use some baking soda with a can of coke rinse and repeat then see what you have or what you don't have.

I don't think I'd waste the time cleaning that up. Find a good used WUR, water bridge and start from scratch.

The car should start on the 9 th fuel injector (cold start) it just may not KEEP running IF the control pressure regulator is bad. The hose is a vacuum line used to adjust the mixture as manifold pressure changes.

On my 79 euro, I was having cold start problems, turn out to be bad vacuum lines to the WUR and the spring under the air flow sensor plate was sticking.
You can check the WUR with a fuel pressure test kit per the WSM. You can check the air flow sensor by pushing the plate down and seeing if it returns up properly.

If the car sat for 9 years with fuel in the system the entire fuel system will need to be rebuilt, or a conversion to megasquirt or the like.
