Default ignition switch key reassembly

I'm replacing the key that goes between the key tumbler mechanism and the ignition switch. There is a little paddle and tiny spring as part of the assembly. How does that part fit into the inside of the mechanism? It appears to be some type of return spring.

its made so that the switch will return to the run position, so it wont stay in the crank position unless you hold it there.
Also there should be a feature where the key wont return to the crank position once its come out of the crank position , unless the key is turned back to the off position

Jim, do you mean behind this white plastic piece?

Yes, it's on the other side of that plastic piece and I think on the other side of the metal cam piece that drives the ignition switch.

OK, I'll try to get behind it. Wish me luck. Got my share of bags of puzzles for "later reassembly"already, though.

Am afraid to remove the plastic piece with the metal shaft.
I do see a spring. Looks like it rides inside the end cap, which isn't off.

This has some Jim Bailey descriptions embedded. I'm interested, too, in maybe removing the steering wheel lock. https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...=steering+lock

Take it out, don't be afraid. It's very easy to reinstall and you will then have it in your hand and will readily see how it all works together. I just had mine apart last week.

I removed the assembly but can't figure out how the little plastic flappy thing and small spring go together. It's located behind the the plastic and metal cam piece that is attached to the key that drives the ignition lock. It's on the side of the ignition tumbler part of the mechanism.

Here you go. You can see how the spring hooks onto the little metal nub on the cam and on the plastic nub on the plastic portion. You can also see the relation of the plastic cam to the metal cam.

No, that is obvious. I will post a picture of what I'm talking about in a few minutes.

Look the item near the digital caliper. Also notice the small spring.

My 78 didn't have that piece. What is it for? Where does it go?
