Wheel flares to quench and rain splash from the tires.
Guess the Japanese don't like it when rain is kicked up and around the cars.
Nice GTS.
On top of the other mechanical tips, might want to replace the fuel lines as well.

If you made those flares in fiberglass, could you put big red JDM stickers on them sell them to the aspirational VW crowd? You might have to machine a cutout in one for clearing their big exhaust tips.
Seriously though, they're worth a fortune:

Really seriously, tho, that is indeed a gorgeous car. Congrats!

Very nice car. sounds like you bought it for a good price. As others have noted, release the flex plate tension asap.

Its not necessarily own Japanise model dash which causes difference in software behavior. It can be normal for ROW km version. Can for example German LHD dash be changed to show miles? I can't check my own cars as on both engine wiring harness etc is out. There are several different ROW dash versions like one for just France, another for Italy and one for Japan but difference between these can be for example default language and in Japanise case also their own requirements like cat temp warning.

My metalic silver 87 is a japan import, left hand drive no flares.....perhaps because it was originallly imported into Japan from Germany.....most of the dash info is in german on mine. Be sure to follow up on the advice to check /release flexplate pressure and crank play.....mine had 83,000 kms and the thrust bearing was hooped within 1500 kms. Good luck with it.

I bet the LHD Japan market cars because they were imported later slipped under the radar and didn't have to have the fender flares. I think all the Japan market cars (where the car was shipped there FROM Porsche originally) have the flares...
