I alternated between an 85.5 944 and the rough 84 5spd 928 last year.

The 928 is ungodly cool to drive in hilly country. Extremely fun.

Well it sounds like most of you think it is descent car for the money and most of you think it is a good deal if it is mechanically sound. "anonymousagain" has a pointed out a lot of things in the pictures that I did not see. The seller did say the sunroof works fine and did say the interior needs some work. I am pleased with the seat and carpet condition. It appears to me with my untrained eye that judging by the condition of the drivers seat the miles might be correct. I also think the engine compartment looks fairly clean for the age. For some of you that have looked at the pics, do you feel this looks like a 95K mile car?

I think its unlikely. These things are 25 years old. The odos break. You can have speedometer but no odometer and drive for years and years. You'd have to know the owner situations for a long, long period of time to validate it being sub-100.

(My odo is at 97K. Been there for the last 30K miles or so since I've had it. Owner said it was original mileage at 97, but I've found lots of evidence that the speedo was replaced once and the odo was broken and looked at muliple times since)

On the other hand, these engines run forever if treated reasonably well.

All I can say about the mileage is YMMV. I've seen 30k mile cars with trashed interiors and others with way over 100k that are nearly perfect. My own car has 117k on it and the interior is extremely nice. People usually can't believe how many miles are on it. So it's possible the miles are correct and the interior is still in pretty nice shape. I think most of the items you can see in the pics are minor and easily fixed, and good negotiating points when you're talking to the dealer. You can probably address all of them in a weekend of cleanup. Like I said, if it drives well it's a decent deal and if the a/c works, it's a steal. It's just a car and a pretty inexpensive one at that, don't over-think it and have fun!

rgs944;

Took a look at the pics. Car looks good. Almost the spitting image on mine. The car looks good on the exterior, underbody and engine bay. Mostly every thing I can see that need attention seem minor. However be aware of the electrical gremlins that can spoil your party. I am trying to sort out my reverse lights and back up lights on my car. It was draining the battery overnight but I got that sorted out, I hope! Get some one to start it and check the idle, and the clutch, vac hoses, etc. If these are in good condition it is a STEAL at $3500.00. As for me I am happy with my car and the amount of power it has. Im not a real speed demon so I do not need the 32V motor. It has plenty enough power to get you a **** load of tickets and how often are you gonna RUN it flat out. So far the fastest Ive been is 95mph and I know it will still hit 140mph if I go ***** out! I would not pass on it as long as like others have said you are not buying it as an investment but for your Enjoyment!

Good Luck!

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the post. I learned a lot. The car I was asking about has been sold. I screwed around too long trying to figure out shipping. Might be for the best anyway. I will be on the lookout for maybe a later model S4 but would consider anything with the S. I like the looks of the 83 and up cars. Also any car has to be a 5 or 6 speed for me. I just need the race car feel of shifting. I will probably be looking more in the $6000 to $9000 range because it looks like that is where the best value is for the most car. I am in no hurry so it might be a year long process to find the right one. Thanks again for all your help.

The car has a rusty wheelarch on the passenger side back.You can see the bend fender on one of the last pictures (33).
I think this is a no go.
