Default '90 diag port

Do all '90 MY cars have the 19 pin diag port? If so where is it.............pic would be great

I've searched around the brains and its not as evident as the 12pin port on my '88.

TIA

Right side of the pass seat, under the cover where the fan brain and the audio amp live.

The 2nd pic is the same area of my '88 S4...............there's no diag port here.

Is that transformer OEM?

Oh Ye of Little Faith...
------------------------

The transformer is most likely a choke on the power lead feeding the audio amp, to help cut down on alternator whine.

Not at all...................just an old fashioned hands on type but I do thank you for the direction.

The choke probably serviced the OEM pwr amp which 'was' under the pass. seat but now in the 'used parts' bin.

For those following along the 19 pin diag. port is for the '89 MYs and up. The '87 and '88 MYs have a 12 pin diag port thats on the OEM ECU frame (dont have a pic but its in the '87 spec book).

To complicate matters further the early '87 models may not have the diagnostic s/w programmed in the ECU eproms. This is resolved by replacing the eproms that contained accessible software.

Did I miss something?

Where did the GT come from?

Hi Rich.................long time.

The GT came from Japan and I'm working on it.

How did things work out with your car?

Hi Malcolm,
this might help you locate the 12pin diag port on the 1988 S4.
http://jenniskens.livedsl.nl/Technic...4/MyTip421.htm

The transformer is a noise suppressor, one side is to 12v, one is gnd and one side is power to the booster. It reduces negative voltage spikes via a diode to gnd, and a coil suppresses noise on top of the the 12v.

Good luck with the two cars !
Regards

New avatar Malcolm? Mr Young will be upset to be dropped!

A geeky point but I really like the 19-pin connector compared with the rectangular 12-pin. Looks just like something from a military jet.

Thx Theo.............I had the 12 pin diag port located but its good to confirm. As my car is no longer fitted with the OEM pwr amp I'm thinkin' this xformer will go as well.

Neil shall return Adrian.............no worries. I had the race car up there as my support for winning the 24hr Daytona race with a V8 Porsche engine.

I concur re. your points on the connectors.............wonder how many 'regular' cars had diag ports back then?.
