Flip side: buying an inexpensive one with such issues would be my objective. Right? Lets say we confirmed low numbers for end play. It drove and tracked well, shifted well. Then, the purchase might be very good at sub $4K, better at sup $3k. $1000 to $2500 parts and a hell of a lot of spare time labor working alone in the garage at night --- bam --- a cool car to drive. Would want very nice interior and body for that to work.
Nope-no connection on the rear. It seemed minor and very good body work-just some telltale overspray.

Since I do not have the time (or space) for the work I need to find one that is well-sorted.

Thanks!!!

Michael

By the way, I quoted that line to the guys at A. Bauer and they were laughing.

So what do you guys figure is the value of this car? By that I mean cash in hand, reasonable sale price?

I'd say $6-7K if no other issues are found. It has potential to be a concours car-but the amount of work will be at least $2300 or more...

The interior and paint are excellent and the engine is in fine shape-but again-these are expected maintenance items.

I dunno... I bought my 86.5 two years ago (150k miles) for under $5k, 5 speed transmission (see my avatar) and it was in much better shape than the eBay car seems to be in. It did need a new WP/TB immediately, though.

One thing to be aware of with rear-hit cars, possibly including this one.

If the hatch is misaligned, open it up, take the tool panel off, and check the floor of the hatch area behind the tool panel. Sometimes there's a wrinkle where the hatch area has buckled, and it usually means the chassis is not quite straight any more, as the force was enough to transfer through to the unibody.

Given the issues, I'd say this car is likely a 4k car, even allowing for good interior and being 86.5. Thats quite a lot of mechanical expense going by the labour charges.

$5k max. you must take every estimate of cost to repair update maintenance and X 2. You will discover things to replace WYAIT. Probably needs the fuel lines replaced as well. Save your money and get a really well sorted car for $10k from member of this forum that has a documented history. I keep think about rperry's S4 that sold for $10k. Great, well owned and cared for car.

Sorry and pleased you did not buy this car. Sorry because I know what it is like to think/hope you have found "the" car and then discover through a ppi that is not the 'one'. Hang in there Michael.

The deals seem to favor the methodical home mechanic with time on his hands.

I think the TB/WP were the ONLY things sorted out in wear 'n' tear maintenance items...

And, the first thing I'd do is disassemble the front of the motor and check it.

So after I tell the guy all the problems he "lowers" the price to me to "$9000" I told him good luck with it on eBay. The shop estimates $3000-4000 in repairs needed in the next few weeks.

Thanks everyone-I walked away.
