Having Windshield Replaced...Precautions,etc.?
Hi Guys,
I'm having a reputable glass shop come out and replace my windshield next week. The new glass is from PPG, so no worries there, but I was curious about any precautions that need to be watched out for, etc when replacing a windshield on our cars. The shop is sending someone over to my garage to replace it and I'm going to watch for educational purposes, and I hate having to tell someone how to do their job, but I just want to have the info ready in case I see him do or don't do something, etc that needs to be done to a 928.
Thanks in advance.

I would ask them to tape off the A-Pillars and on the roof to help prevent scratches. I had glass replaced on a previous car and asked them to do this and they insisted it wasn't necessary. The guy had his tail between his legs when I pointed to a scratch that wasn't there before. I was pissed!

Make sure they don't cut through the paint in the channel behind the glass. Previous owner of my A6 had glass put in it and they scored the paint. 4-5 years later it rusted underneath the glue. Windshield had to be removed, several inches of metal cut out and replaced, and the roof panel repainted. It was $1000 labor plus a new windshield to fix it. Also had another $500 of water damage to the A pillar covers from water leaks caused by this. My other Audi is showing similar paint bubbling signs as well. Dammit!

Make sure the guy puts in the little rubber pads under the glass when he sets the windshield in. They sit on top of the cowl and the weight of the glass is on these pads. Can lead to a cracked windshield if left out. I'm sure he will do this. Just a precaution to look out for.

Your best bet would be to remove the glass, have it painted, and then have the new windshield installed. Paint doesn't get scratched on the installation, it gets damaged on removal. Having it out for painting also allows them to take care of any issues under the glass.
