Sean,

I thought about doing it there too... to many moving parts that I couldn't see around to be sure I was clearing as well as to much hot stuff under there for me. Not to mention still having to open the hood. I think someone did it your way and ran it out through the front air intake, I kind of liked that... Still prefer mine at the back better because no hot stuff back there and I could do it myself.

I hardwired mine to the battery and just leave it hooked up all the time. The tender sits in the trunk in the flaps of the hatch cover. When I want to charge I run the power plug out the driver side window and plug into a drop cord. This way I don't ever have a chance of driving away with it plugged in. I really don't do any spirited driving, I just drive so I don't worry about it moving around.

James,
If you drove them enough you would not need the charger. But I guess with so many, you can't get around to driving all of them, so I could come by and give blue a spin around the town once in a while for ya.

My charge socket is under the rear license plate, via a fused lead direct to battery poles. Its a heavy duty offroad socket, with a positive connection on centre pole as below, and sealing cap. Direct battery connection means I can isolate the car's earth, but leave battery on charge. The lead hanging out the back (its parked nose in) means you cant fail to notice it before driving - just yank the plug out and you are good to go.

I tried putting mine it at the back, but routing the cable out seemed more tricky, I didn't fancy cutting any holes and I was worried about closing the hatch onto the wire..

So I've done mine similar to Sean R (only lazier, I'm sure ) - I found it a lot easier to install in the front (especially the way my car is kept in the garage, more visible too so I can't forget!) and there's plenty of gap for the wire to feed out.

The cables are now tidied and clipped out of the way compared to the above.. Still, at the weekend, I think I'll rearrange it to use the proper earth point near the oil cooler, as was suggested - although for now the connections seem happy enough (happy enough to go into "maintenance" mode anyway).

TRickle chargers should not be any issue at all to any equipment on board, as long as they trickle. I have read of cases of ECU damage from jump starts....but not seen one first hand.Mine doesnt have a brain(K-Jet), so about all I could kill would be the radio.

Having been under the impression that this could not be done I moved on in my thinking. But now I definitely want to install one of these as the car will sit for periods without use. Can you all give me an idea of what brands you are using, what the max amperage out should be, and where is a good source to obtain a charger.

Thanks for the help,
Dave

A hot new battery is going to hit the car with 600+ Cold Cranking Amps and somehow .6 amps from a maintainer or even 50amps from a starter charger is going to be a problem to the cars systems??? I don't even think jumping the car is a problem. I think it is a bad coincidence that some LH's (or whatever the part is that experiences the failure) happens to fail upon jumping a car. Just does not make any sense. You have a nearly dead battery and then you connect another battery that is probably not fresh either and somehow that is creating so much current that it is going to blow out systems...

James, I am in complete agreement with you on theory, but being a newbie to the technical side of the 928, I try and go with the best info on hand, and be cautious where others have failed / had issues. That said, it looks like the slow charge option is working well for everyone, and I look forward having the convenience in my own 928.

Best, Dave

Dave, a slow charge even at 10+ amps should not be any problem at all and as noted a maintainer is something like .6 amps...no worries. Be sure to get a good one that only comes on when it "sees" a battery voltage drop. The always on charger can burn up/explode a battery.

BTW, my previous post was not directed specifically at you...this is a topic that has come up from time to time and I have just ignored it and moved on...not this time.

Be cool! Best of luck with the 928! They ROCK!

Do a search here for 'trickle charger', should point you at many threads. I was just down at our local dealer, and they are selling a trickle unit made by Ctek, which is a very good name in this game . Any real trickle unit with an output of 1-2A should do the job - mine is 1.6A. You may also find lower outputs - I use a 0.9A unit on a motorcycle 14AH battery.

Yea, I may have been thinking 1.6 amps and just typing .6 because I have lost my mind... LOL!

James, no worries at all. I appreciate the information and your help in getting up to speed on the 928.

Cheers, Dave
