Inspect / Change Fuel Lines

Default Inspect / Change Fuel Lines

With a 23 year old car I would not bet the bank on the condition of the fuel lines. I would like to start inspecting / replacing the lines, but would appreciate some help on sorting which lines I need to look at. So far I have come up with the following list from the parts manual:

Illustration 201-05
928 356 550 05 - Rubber
928 356 063 10 - Non Rubber ???
928 356 053 01 - Rubber

Illustration 201-10
928 356 081 04 - Rubber

Illustration 107-15
928 110 269 01 - Rubber
928 110 271 02 - Rubber
928 110 367 15 - Rubber
928 110 359 08 - Rubber

Any other suggestions for inspection are appreciated. Also, do I need to be as worried about the non-rubber lines?

Finally, do you have a recommendation on where to buy fuel lines / what type to go with (braided, replacement rubber, etc.)

I got educated by Roger why they need to be changed, because I first disagreed to change them on a S4.
Anyways, call Roger at "928sRUS" because he sells a kit that will replace what is necessary for each year model.
let me find the thread on whats in the kit.

Speak to Roger at 928sRus. He has a kit ready to go for S4's - no need to waste your time researching. Make sure you mention you have an '87 as the hose at the rear is different to later S4.

I am in the process of doing this on my 84, courtesy of a box of parts from Roger. then succumbed to the WYAAIT'itis....

coolant hoses, pulled intake to paint, ordered a paint kit from Eastwood Garage to simulate the look of CAD plating for the hard fuel lines and hose clamps.



and now that the whole top of the motor exposed, might as well do those plugs and wires.

arrrgggg..... must... stop... buying... parts.

if your doing the fuel lines make sure to replace the heater control valve and the short hose, unless these 2 parts have altready been replaced, these are the weak links in the cooling system, and now is the time, you have been warned

Hi!

Does Roger sell fuel hose kit for the '84 L-jet?
It does not show on his website (928srus), and from what I have seen from his postings here, I thought that a kit for the L-jets was still "under development"..

I am still (after reading all the threads here and on 'the other site') confused about what type of fuel hoses I should get for my '84 L-jet...

Might want to look through my recent thread on this for specific '87 issues.

I found a problem with the hoses that come from Porsche. Seems some of the early '87's have a different connector into the fuel cooler.

As for the hoses, Roger's kit works great with the addition of a couple of extra hoses for the '87.

Roger knows what he needs now after helping me with my car so I'd call him if I were you.

If you don't mind not having original lines you can have a welder make these:

buy 2 of these, cut the metric side off and weld them onto the stock fuel line fittings.

Then you can go to -6AN fittings and braided or stainless steel lines for everything and ditch those stock lines, dampers, regulator and just run an aftermarket Fuel pressure regulator set at the stock 30 psi. It was easy and eliminates a bunch of vacum lines. Actually I got rid of all my vacum lines but you don't have to go that far. I'm installing a supercharger so I prepped it for just that.

Yes. The kit consists of a coil of the appropriate hose & hose clamps. I have many pictures of installing the kit on 2 84 L-jetronic cars if you want me to post them or links to them.

Roger selected a high pressure hose suitable for fuel injection, but with a bending radus that allows the odd tight bends to be made without crimping or overstressing the hose. There are other solutions. I have four cars with this hose and recommend it (kit is pretty much the same for 85 and 86, as well as LH jet 84/5/6, although where needed he adjusts diameter.... just specify your car and you will get what works.).

Its an easy job to do. There are a couple of other things you should do when you install them, like replace rubber grommets on the fuel injector rails because you need to remove them to do the job.

Roger doesn't have a heavy website presence because he says he prefers email and telephone for his business model. As a customer with no affiliation other than 2 years of buying history, I can assure you that he is a fair dealer. (Likewise, our other sponsors on the site are fair dealers, too, and may have fuel line solutions !!!)

Hi!

I have (I think..) identified the four fuel hoses in the engine bay as the attached pictures shows.
( Why would I need to remove the fuel injector rails?)

I think he means the rail covers.

Well, maybe I'm wrong with my advice.

L-Jet, or L-Jetronic to me means the USA-style 16v EFI ( post-mechanical fuel injection) with the Air Flow Meter. (Injectors pictured below for 84)
On mine, each injector uses a 50mm length of hose and they are usually cooked to a crisp if not replaced.

LH-jet to me means the Rest of World car with the hot wire MAF, as well as the 85 and 86 USA 32V cars. On the 85/6 USA the injectors are directly pressed into the rail without the hoses. I don't remember how the ROW 84/5/6 (Euro) cars are setup.

What set-up do you have --- nice white car BTW!
Either way, or some other way, Roger or the other suppliers can help you with the hose and fittings.

The picture is what we just finished on our 1984. Was EASY I used the old trick of spraying Silicone on the rubber so it slipped over the barbs easier. Great SAVINGS at $32.50.
