Default '89 32V 2R cylinder heads for sale

https://rennlist.com/forums/for-sale...-complete.html

its $1,000 for the complete cylinder heads , $1,500 for the block and cylinder heads. the block had thrust bearing failure but only had 36k miles on it. I believe they are 2R cylinder heads i will be posting pictures soon of the cylinder heads and the engine, i also have random parts that came off the engine for free with purchase of block. like throttle body.

Those don't look like '89 heads- they have round intake inlets, 2-stud exhausts, are 928.104.411.2R (not 928.104.413.XR), and have S3 cams in them. Your pic of the intake is from an '85 or '86 engine. Was this in your '89 car? ('88 car? I'm so confused....)

Those do look like 85-86 heads, but the part number has a 2R on it. I can only guess that you bought a 85-86 engine and used the short block for the 89.
Good eye Rob, I didn't realized it when I first looked at the pics.

those are 85-86 heads and cams. you can tell by the longer cam that fits into the last bearing, which the S4 in '87 didnt have, also the combustion chamber has much more volume because of the flatter top pistons

how did you get the heads off without taking the cams out?? i was thinking of doing this on my rebuild, but that last nut near the front of the engine was near impossible to get at, even with a 1/2 drive swivel

Okay so 85-86 heads do have 2R on them, not the S4 heads. I just realized I was told that S4 has 1R and 3R, not 2R.

Heads changed during 89.

IIRC 2R is the earlier head with the shorter head bolts
3R is the later head with longer head bolts - redesigned head following lots of warranty work for cracked heads (between the head bolt lands normally between 3/4 and 7/8) and coolant in the oil

The early 32V shortblock will not work, without machining the valve releaves, withe the S4 heads. Also, the knock seensor holes would need to be drilled and tapped into the block too. Whoever was using this to fit a pair of heads to it must have known that this is not an S4 engine.

it will work, but it will just be more of an interference engine.

So, whenever a 85 block is used for a stroker, you need to drill the knock sensor holes, or is that just for the early S3 blocks?

The S4 heads on that block would be a nice bump in compression!

Well the block in picture 1016 is from an '89 S4 Auto (M28/42 81K 06513), so it is an '89 block. With S3 heads? My brain hertz.

the block is alredy cst for the knock sensor, only the hole has to be drilled deep enough to cu the threads in it.

I think the new replacement short block was from a complete 85-86 engine, he just swapped his 89s heads and intake and exhaust system on the 85-86 short block(higher compression?), and now selling the remains of the 85-86 engine plus the original 89 short block.

you mean the heads pictured? Those are 85-86 heads.
In 87 the heads changed and stayed the same until end of production in 95 with only a few modes on where the head bolt goes and the GTS had the extra hole drilled for exhaust port cooling.
