Want to get another Porsche...968 or 928?
So after selling my 944 that I spent way to long dealing with that ended in a sad departure, I realize, I miss my car so I am looking at getting another one. I am looking to get something other than a 944 and looking between a 968 or a 928 and decided that I will post in both forums and get opinions...
Sw What I like and dislike....
928 1987 - on...(don't want anything before then)
Pros:
I like the body style more then anything before 86.
V8...more power...always good...
More sites out there for parts/upgrades
Cons:
Most I am seeing are autos...and the manuals are 5 speeds.
Interior doesn't look as updated as a 968.
968
Pros:
I like the style a bit more
Interior looks more updated
6 speed manual
Cons:
4 cycl.
Lack of performance sites
If anyone can post your thoughts and opinions, please do.
Thanks,
space

928 has enough torque 5 speed is all that's needed.
Pre 87 is the best looking!
Nothing dated inside + plenty of hot interiors available from Budd champagne Nicole et al..
It's a v8 fast and incredibly comfy!

yeah, the 968 is close to the 944 85.5. it seems more smoth where the 928 seems more bulky and the same. Big buttons and the heater/air controls seems a bit old. what is this Budd champagne Nicole et al upgrades?
as for the manual, it seems that the manuals are going for too much and a auto is probably be what I stick with. I would LIKE to have a manual most, but we'll see...

I like the 968, but the power and ultimate speed of the 928 is intoxicating. Not to mention the handling and comfort. The real reason why I like the 968 is because Porsche took a 944 and made it look a bit more like a 928!

I love the 968.
You've worked and lived with a 944. You'll know at least half of the 968 systems. They're balanced. They're rare. They look cool. They're awesome.
However!!! Is finding a 6 speed 968 coupe any harder than finding a 5 speed 928? I hate the cabs (pre-apologies for anyone who likes 'em-i'm just a targa/hardtop dude), and it seems that most I find are cab+tiptronics.
Are you a buy and drive or buy and resto-mod?
Lots of 968 upgrades, I believe, match the 944, sans motor mods. That's a big bit of info, esp once you start stealing from the 951 folks for suspension work.
928: mega mod$$ on everything is available. Potential power upgrades dwarf most anything you can get out of the 968. Stock for stock you'll outpower the 4cyl until you save enough cash to go nuts, or you'll decide that you s4 is good enough. My s4 rebuilt to near stock specs amazes me I have friends with a 944s and another with a 924s3 ('87 924 w/complete 968 drivetrain) and I wouldn't trade with either, though the 924 hybryd is close. It doesn't have a cabin as nice as the 928 though.
All said and done, I'd get my cash together and watch the market. If you are totally torn, I'd snap up the first one of either model that's in the best shape. The price won't be that different between a nice s4 manual or a good 968 6 speed.
If you find yourself really asking yourself these questionsn ask this one:
If I sold the one I bought, what would I upgrade to?
For myself, the answer is simple: I can't upgrade for less than $100k. There is absolutey nothing I could come across that I'd want to buy short of a 997 GT3, and that's a bloody different ballgame.
Good luck with this one and let us know how it turns out!

You need to consider the driving dynamics of the cars your considering.
The 968 has lighter controls and "feels" quicker and more responsive when driving it. The 928 is designed to drive at triple digits comfortably and it doesn't really come alive until you're doing at least 60+ mph. You can still toss it around but the limits are much higher.
If you want an MT, get an MT. You won't be happy with an Auto IMHO and I wouldn't settle.
Most important and something that others have touch upon, get the absolute best condition you can afford. Maintenance records are a must, otherwise expect to pay less up front and more later.

I'm really leaning toward the 928 because it is an upgarde...power wise. I seem to find the 968's with 6 speeds that aren't bad priced, around 10Kish or less. I hate cabs, so cancel those. But I had a 944, I liked it alot, handled well, but I like power more so that is why I'm leaning towards the 928. I can't find one with a 5 speed that they don't want big bucks for. I found a really nice s4 for around 11K with 92K miles on it. That is something that I can drive around, have the power, then when I save the money up, do big mods. Problem, auto. I'm not a own and drive guy when it comes to my toys, so I am going to upgarde.

Bingo.
Never. Settle.
Put the emotions aside a bit when you check out a car. If there are any "well I guess I'll live with that" thoughts, leave it be.
Unless of course, you can upgrade yourself out of it before you even get home. This is rare.

since this is a 928 forum...clearly there is a preference for 928's....with that said the best advice is find well running examples of both cars (I would compare auto vs auto etc) to drive and see which one you like better...but to be fair don't compare a beater 968 to a perfect 928....

Space, where are you located? Someone might be able to provide a well sorted 928 experience for you.
Don't settle for the auto, the 928 takes some dedication and if there's a major detractor it can easily ding your enthusiasim. The only auto I had fun in (riding) was a a murf supercharged car and it blew the transmission the same day.
I auto-x my manual, and have tracked it and love it!

Drive an early model 928 before you reject them. Many say they feel much lighter and nimbler than the later ones. You might like it. I've only driven 2 later models (including a GTS) and I like the feel of mine better. Lots more manuals available with the early models too.
