here we go...I hope its clear enough - grayish part is the section surface where I cut it. Apparently all Porsche boots went to this some time in early 80 - mine is Jan 83 and had them. Maybe its not 1/4", at least 5/32 ? Obviously the sleeve is grooved to match, making it almost impossible to slide off.

I had this problem also. It's nearly impossible to get a clean greaseless mate between the flange and boot. I ended up using hose clamps on the outboard side, and none on the shaft, so the boot could "float". It took 2 sets of hands to do this with the axles on the car.
I think the boots relax a little over time, making them not want to pop off so badly. They've stayed on for years, knock on wood...
