Default Help Please - Annual Electrical Maintenance

Had a good day in the garage with my 2nd wife, however stumped on a few items. Need guidance.

Will Itemize for easier responses, replies.

1) Where and What is Item # 7 of Wally's list? (the battery still, or something else?) Maybe all the electrical cleaner is numbing my brain? If this is somewhere else, I need a visual aid, I think?

"#7 Raise the hood (bonnet). Remove the protective cap from the jump start terminal.............."

2) Also my relay is missing for Time relay for seatbelts, what actually does this mean, or what could putting in a relay benefit?

3) Also # 22 fuse looks previously burned, and missing. I read it is the Fuel Pump, Warm up reg, Aux Air Valve.. That sounds important, however the car runs good?

Please enlighten this novice............

Thanks, Ron-

78 - 928

1) The jump start terminal is a metal stud attached to the right fender inner panel, between the radiator and the engine crossbar, just above the ignition box. The battery cable runs to the starter solenoid. A heavy red wire runs from there to the alternator, and from there to the jump start terminal. Slightly smaller red wires run from the jump start terminal to the Central Electric Panel. There should be a cover over the stud - it is a direct, always hot connection to the positive battery post, so be careful.

2) The time relay on the seat belts was part of a complex Federally-required system that gave a warning if you didn't have the seat belt fastened. Many of these systems have been ripped out by previous owners.

3) Fuse #22 is the fuel pump fuse. If yours is no longer there, someone has installed a work-around to replace the burned fuse.

There is no post cover for a '78, unless someone added it after market. They were not stock in the first year or two. There is a small black plastic cap over the post itself however.

Ron - here are pics of the hot post in the engine bay. It is located on the front right side of the bay, in front of the cross brace.

The first picture is from my '78, and it came with no post cover other than the black plastic cap that goes over the stud (mine shows plier marks on it). This was the stock arrangement. Note the two large diameter reddish cables going into it at each end. The second pic is of my former 86.5, which did have the post cover (stock from the factory), and that cover covered the stud and the plug and everything else.

As to jumping (or trickle charging in the winter), you can do this from the hot post (after removing the cap/cover). You need to be careful with jumping the later models, tho, because you can fry the brains.

As to ground points, there is a diagram in the FAQs at the top of this forum. Read thru that - there is tons of info in there. Also, your glove box manual will have this info too, and if you didn't get one with your car, call one of the 3 main vendors or look on ebay.

Looking at your CE panel in your above picture, I also note that the cover is off one of your relays (relay VII, for the headlight washers). I would replace it with one that has an intact cover. I worry about anything not being correctly covered down there (altho others can say whether it's a big deal or not).

Jim, just go to the Admin New Visiter thread at the top of this forum and read thru it. It's not too long, but chock full of info, including ground point diagrams like Ducman posted above. The grounds points may have varied somewhat over the model years. for instance, my '78 doesn't have the ground point in the same place in the rear near the rear wiper motor as later year models have.

As to search, this function hasn't worked well since John D sold RL to IB. Try searching with quote marks around the term, and that may help. Hopefully someday this feature will work properly again - after all, one of the main points of this forum is the collective knowledge of folks gathered over the years on the 928. If you can't access it, then the forum just becomes a glorified chat board.
