I'm doing the intake and cam cover refresh this weekend. On Dwaynes intect refresh this subject came up. The recommendations were vasoline (I have) and a synthethic grease. Only synthetic grease's I can find are for wheel bearings and brakes, can't find Super Lube Synthetic Grease. Looked at Napa, Advanced, Autozone.

Are these other synthetic greases ok to use on the rubber bits?

Glenn what do you need any grease for??
I dont remember using any type of grease to lube the intake, except for a very small dab of wheel bearing grease for the flappy bearings and the throttle shaft bearings .
If you have the intake off then you should also consider replacing the throttle shaft bearings they are the same as the flappy bearings Roger has newer style double sealed bearings

The only other thing i used was non settinig silicone grease for the side covers of the intake DC111 Dow Corning and also used on any other O ring fitting

 

Yep...silicone grease or lithium grease...just don't use anything with a petroleum base..makes rubber stretch and deform

Glenn, sorry I can't make it Sat...got my GT in pcs and have got to spend the time on it...you can find lithium grease at an Ace Hardware..used for door sliders / window sliders..maybe Lowes or HD

 

Glen, I've been using permatex dielectric grease in a very thin layer, extensively.
Putting it on vac fittings, intake boots, electrical rubber boots and on some body nuts and bolts as an antiseize. I love the stuff.
But I don't know if its O2 sensor safe, to your point.
Cars seem fine, though. They have new sensors that don't act poisoned.

 

Anything with silicone is not O2 safe.


For the rubber intake boots on the 16V and 85/86 cars I use rubbing alcohol or brake cleaner. Gives just enough lube to help slide the parts on, then evaporates. I've has issues using any real lube allowing the parts to work themselves loose.
Might also have something to do with 17psi in the maifold......

Same goes for vacuum lines.

You are right, the intake boots do slip a bit, even 2 years later.

 

Super Lube Synthetic Grease is available at West Marine. It may be called "Winch Grease".

 

Definitely nothing with silicones in it...... death to O2 sensors.

 

For rubber bits - like the 10 pressure gaskets for the intake and to lube the inside of hoses to help get them on - I use glycerin.
