Default Supercharger oil drain question

I am working on installing my system on my 85. My FAST kit that was modded by Motorsports SLC came with a hose barb threaded into a bung welded into the top part of the dipstick tube. The bung is 1/8 NPT and the barb is 3/16" which I am thinking is pretty small. The Vortech S/C had a 1/2 hose nipple in the drain and from a bit of research this is what the Mustang guys are using, but they are punching a hole in their oil pan to attach it. I ran the car and at idle the drain tube was completely full of oil and probably backed up into the S/C

My concern is the S/C is not going to be able to drain fast enough and the excess oil inside it may cause problems. Any thoughts?

If this is the case, I can probably make something up that will make it drain faster, once I figure out what thread the dipstick tube uses.

Ted,

Front of engine there is a hole covered with a bolted plate on the oil pan. Should be visible when looking down on the driver's side of the crank pulley.. Remove this plate, drill and tap as you wish... Straight shot from your SC to the sump..

However, make sure the crankcase is not pressurized from blowby, or it will back up anyway.. Vent in some manner... DR has the provent kit... There are also other ways, but it needs to be vented in some manner as it gets pressurized from the blowby when you SC the motor....

Hope that helps,

I spoke with Carl at 928 motorsports about this. He said to keep in mind that it is not oil coming out of the head, but froth. You should have a big line to support it. Otherwise the seals on the SC head will start to weep. He gave recommendation regarding dash numbers, which I wrote down and then lost, but I think he was talking about 1/2" or so.

Thanks guys for the quick responses, I will remove that plate and drill tap it for a 1/2" NPT. My setup didn't look right to me. I am setting up a breather catch can to vent the crankcase as well and I may use the 3/16 barb on the dipstick to drain that one back into the pan.

Ted,

You're welcome..

I would also check the restrictor fitting in the supply line.. I would check with Vortech, or whomever made your compressor, as you don't want to pressure feed the SC too much oil and blow the seals..

I don't know how much the Vortech restrictor size is, but common sizes are 0.030, 0.062. Many turbo's use the 0.030 fitting, as well as a few SC's... A tip is to use an AN-4 flare fitting and grind off the flare edge, and then get an NOS fitting box with a few sizes and experiment if you can't get any info..

You may also want to consider using a check valve in the drain line to the sump...

Cheers and good luck,

The oil feed to the S/C is a probe with a small hole in it like the one in the pic. Even though it has a very small hole, it comes in under pressure where the drain is just gravity.

I think once my little 3/16 drain line starts to fill it doesn't let air back up which makes it worse. Plus the returning oil gets pretty frothy. The 1/2" hose will probably fix the issue.

I installed a blower on a car and did not pay enough attention to the installation directions, the installation manual called for what amounted to boost pressure going into the crankcase, the first test drive blew almost every single seal and gasket on the engine out.

The folks that wrote the manual said they would look into that.

I am as much to blame as they are, I did not think about what they were telling me to do.

I hear ya, the FAST instructions say to put the S/C belt around the power steering pump and use it as a tensioner, I corrected that right away!
