Resurrecting this thread as I have a leaking transmission on MY 84 when it is sitting.
From the posts I gather it is either, pan gasket, cap seal, reservoir O-ring or Bowden cable O-ring.
The cap seal is good and I have replaced the pan gasket with the MB 11 80 but it is still leaking.
It appears the leak is on the reservoir side, with drops coming from the reservoir screws to the pan.
I have the P/N for the reservoir tube O-ring as (477 321 487); however, I don't seem to be able to find the P/N (in PET or on vendors websites) for the Bowden cable O-ring for MY 84?

GregBBRD states "late" o-ring: 999 701 960 40.
Anyone know the Bowden cable O-ring for MY 84?
Landseer?

Thanks in advance,

Bowden cable changes in 87 at time of adoption of the bigger TC which coincides with some changes to trans case.

Bowden cable O-ring for 1984 (early 4 speed auto, actually 83-86) is 999 701 664 40

You will find it in the PET in section 7. Specifically illustration 702-05. Look for part 19c and see if that is what you are thinking about. Check me on the number

I looked and looked in the transmission section for this. I didn't think it would be in the accelerator control section. That is the O-ring I'm looking for (999 701 664 40).

Thanks Landseer.

In my case it was the pan gasket. If I torque it up to spec, it would split after awhile. I degrease the pan gasket bolts and snug it up with 3 finger tip tightness. I also use some blue locktight so it won't back out.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but after replacing the transmission gasket on my 86.5 twice (first time I had the old style gasket), the tranny still leaks, especially when sitting for a few weeks ( I know, I should drive it every week, but I simply do not have enough time :-))

So I want to tackle the issue this winter, once more and decided to:

- replace reservoir (PO glued it, so maybe a small crack somewhere)

- replace reservoir cap gasket

- replace o-ring where reservoir is connected to the pan

- replace o-ring to bowden cable

- replace gasket once again.

I am struggling to install PET but it keeps complaining with HARDLOCK issues (wont bother you too much, I have to find some time to get this installed).

Can anyone provide me with the correct partnumbers for my 86.5, so I can request a price quote at Roger?

Cheers
Michel

you should consider getting a used trans pan,
928 INTL has them and if you wait till December they might have a half price sale on used parts.
The pan you have is probably bent at one or more of the corner tabs ,
thus no seal will work as it keeps getting damaged from the uneven pan mating surface

Mine still leaks after two pan gaskets. I put the pan on a very flat surface and appears to be not warped. I have two spots of fluid about 2" and 3"s in size towards the front ,but it's not the torque converter. Would that be the Bowden cable with the 2 spots?
Thanks, Doug.

pictures would help here.
Is the fluid possibly leaking out of the grate under the torque converter?
if its from the right hand side of the pan then the bowden cable O ring is a likely part to replace.

Mine is still leaking after mult pan gaskets, UV dye check etc. I now have a large drip pan under the transmission pan like a British car

Thanks for all the input, but does anyone have the partnumbers for the parts in my prior post?

Many thanks
Cheers
Michel
