Default Alternator running wild.

I haven't really had any alternator problems on my 928s. I always take them off when I do other work on there, get them rebuilt, and its never been a problem.

On Leeroy, which has a replacement engine, there is an alternator which I am unsure if it was on one car or the other car that came together. It has been making noises in the morning on startup (well, at least I think it has) and it usually is a constant hum which goes up with revs. The voltage has been a bit weak at night ( the car is getting ALOT of use), but today, on my way around town, it basically attempted to peg the vot meter. I understand the Meter is sort of a suggestion of what MIGHT be happening, but I can hear the alternator hum more or less compared to the volt meter moving around.

Getting on the highway to come back home, I ran though the gears and the volt meter went flat. It was basically off down by 10volts for several miles, but then popped back up and went back to 16 or whatever the number by the orange warning area is.

I'm thinking regulator. I have another alternator of similar vintage year, so I will either get that tested and get it rebuilt if needed and get a new regulator put on if it only needs that - and switch it out.

My post here is if anyone has any BTDT on this issue and if its possibly not the regulator/alternator as I believe it is - please post.

Replace the voltage regulator BEFORE driving the car again to avoid frying the electronics in the car.

The altenator will make some noise, but shoudl be pretty much inaudable. If you can hear it pop it apart and put new bearings in it (SKF). If you can hear noise passing through the speakers then ensure that the noise suppressor is either in the spot on the fuse panel, or that there is one on the back of the altenator. It will bolt to the housing, and have a spade connector.

Put a voltmeter n the cigarette lighter, it may be the pod gauge is not working.

I just went outside again to check something else. It looks like there was a loose injector plug - I may steal some of my extra ones and replace a few. I love easy fixes for some thing. That should take care of a slight miss.

On the alternator front - the light is now on, and its not really charging at all unless I rev the engine. I will go over to the other garage and get my extra alternator to have it tested.

Brendan, do the other gauges on the pod jump around when the voltmeter does?
- put a voltmeter on the jump start post - anything more than 14.4 volts is a problem -

Yep. We have a problem. Well, I do. But its simple for what it is. Alternator is on the bottom, I have one sitting somewhere.

At the post and at the cig lighter I have 11.5 with a running car. Soooooo.

I can remember though - the regulator is part of the unit right?

Does this car have the exciter wire fix or need it, or I guess not since the pod light is on.

Pretty sure its on the alternator.

Yes, the red light goes on and off sometimes, when I rev the engine.

Default charging

When I picjkedup the car from Lisa it was showing only 10volts on the freeway. I was sure I'd never make it back tio Anaheim but I did. I later checked what the battery was seeing and it was getting 13 volts when the guage was showing 10.
Just and FYI

When I find the trunk key again tomorrow I will check at the battery.
