It's rich at idle, but not black smoke rich. Of course I'm going to change the oil as well as the 2 dampers before taking it out again. It's going into hybernation tonight till I get my parts together.

I always use the mystery oil when a lifter is stuck on my car. Seems to solve the problem in a few secconds.

I've decided to yank the battery and let it sit under a cover till I fix it. A nice fresh oil change and new dampers before smog time in 2 months ought to put it back on the road free of rich-idle problems.

Let the withdrawls begin until then.

How long do you leave it in before you change it with the MMO in it? Or can you just run it like that?

Lurking from the 951 forum as I too have noisy lifters and am seeking all info I can get. Looks like a good drive is the first thing. Any way, on to the mice/rats. I have found that Bounce fabric softener sheets seem to keep the little destructors at bay, at least the mice. We don't have too many rats where I'm at.

I just run it and wait until the next oil change to drain the MMO. It's safe to keep the MMO in the oil.

I used to have noisey lifters on my 87 s4. It progressivly got worse, particualrly if the car sat for a few weeks.

I assumed the little springs inside my hydraulic lifters were shot (had this happen on a volvo), so I bought 32 used lifters, (not cheap) and just before taking the cams out a time saving miracle occured. Marc anderson mentioned something to me in a routine phone call.

"S4s with the short cams have a rubber plug that blocks two oil circulation holes that are no longer needed. The plugs go bad and literally fall out."

I checked noisy head and what do you know, one had fallen out and the other was badly warped with age.

His solution is small metal rods that block the passages with something that wont age or warp.

I have not had lifter noise since. Thats in 4 years, 27,000 miles of use!

Runs better with no lifter noise when you change the oil. That's my experience last weekend.

Default small metal rods

Hi

Do you know the part numbers for those rubber plugs ?
Or alternatively where did you get those "small metal rods" ?

I run 5w40 in the 928 and a Miata . Have never had a noisy lifter in either since the switch, and elderly Miata are prone to noisy lifters on the stock oil spec. Once it started so noisily SWMBO shut it down and called me to see if it was safe to drive.
Mind you we dont get much lower than 50F here.

The part numbers for the rods are 928.105.262.00. There are 2 in one head and 3 in the other, so order 5 for a car. They are $1.23 each in the US, so it won't break the bank. Yes, one dollar and 23 cents. That must be a record for a Porsche 928 part, but Porsche was fixing their screw up.

I have installed these in several '87s. The symptoms were, very low oil pressure at idle along with a lot of lifter ticking. As soon as you revved it above ~1200, the engine quieted down and sounded normal, but let it idle and immediate lifter noise. For some reason it was always the right head. The original plugs had the consistancy of playdough. You can mold them with your fingers.

Default While you are at it

Thanks for the #'s

Are these the ones :

Although my lifters on the right side tick, my oil pressure is 3 bar(idle) when hot .

I'll change the oil plugs as soon as i have some new.

$1.23 is record for a 928 part, but then i'l need new cam cover gasket's and other wyait item's.
