Lots of Lifter Noise this Winter; use an additive while storing outside??
My car has been sitting for lengthy times lately as I am not driving it that much this winter. I started it yesterday and was met with really noisy lifters. It continued to be noisy for about 7-10 minutes till I shut it down before the idle started to get erratic (see my fuel damper issue). Last week's startup had no lifter noise. The weather has been cold up here and maybe the oil is too thick in the block. To cut back on wear, would any of you recommend Rislone to add or are there any other additives I can drop in the oil that won't kill this motor on cold starts after long periods of sitting?
I'm also refraining from driving it due to the front fuel damper failed internally and squirting numerous amounts of gas into the vacuum line attached to it. I'll take it for a short drive this weekend to get the fluids to circulate more, but would like to know if an additive would be healthy for the lifters in my car. I'm not an advocate or praiser of these oil additives out there and follow the factory recommendations religiously, any thoughts about this? And, yup I have used the search religiously.
Thanks

I am using 15w-50 and have been since 2001. I know she's due for an oil change, but have put it off due to other priorities.

I'm not a fan of any additive. The lifter noise is just that, noise, it won't damage the engine. Let the engine warm up and I bet it will disapear.

Last time this happened a couple weeks ago I just drove it and it went away. Seems to come back every now and then. I know yesterday it didn't warm up to 1/2 on the temperature gauge. I could also touch the cam covers without getting singed so it definitely wasn't hot enough.

I don't think you can't really warm it up enough sitting still to do any good.
Mine did this a while back after sitting for a couple of months due to dead LH.
Took a good 15 miles of highway temp driving before it went away.
That and all the usual warnings about starting the car and not driving it; condensation etc.
Better to just let it sit til it can be driven properly it seems.

You make a good point. I'll disconnect the battery and let it sit till I get it fixed. What's a good rat poison to keep those little f**kers away from my toy?

Hi, IMO 15w 50 is way too thick for the winter, switch to 0w 40 Mobil 1 and the lifters will fill up quicker as the oil will flow when cold. Still may click a bit depending how long she sits and draines down. If you don't like 0w 40 then do a 5 or 10w 40.

The lifters are making noise because the oil flow to them is insufficient to pump them up. If the oil's not flowing sufficiently to the lifters, do you think that it's flowing as well as it should be to the other parts of the engine that it's supposed to be getting to?

It was cold in Marin County not too long ago. Temps were in the high 30's to low 40's. I may drive it tonight just to give it some attention before disconnecting the battery. I'm probably killing the cats at the same time though.

Mongo you may want to spray the metal parts and wire connections under the hood down with WD-40 if you’re going to store her outside.
WD will put a thin film coat of oil on the parts/connections and keep them from oxidizing.
I do it to the cars that don’t see the garage, it works great and in the spring it will clean off if you want.

Park the car until you change the damn oil, ok Andy?
5,000 miles isn’t usually considered “too much” with any good synthetic, it’s more than I would go. Not to mention I seam to recall a few episodes of excessive rich running conditions with your car? Good chance you dumped a good amount of raw fuel into the crankcase.
Just go buy the cheapest name brand oil in the weight you want to run – even non synthetic. Pop on a new filter and see what happens. Plan on changing again in 3k.
