Thanks! I would love to find an inexpensive set of the 16"... seems most I am finding are 15". The stock OEM rims (7 slot) on my 928 have a 21mm spacer on the back already, so this would be perfect. What was the offest for the 8"x16" phone dials? 52mm?

Try the 951 section or the racing section of either here or Pelican as a WTB visitor. I am sure you can get some turbo phonies with a little patience. Most 951 people upgrade those as they are pretty heavy (compared to Fuchs or Cookies). Also, you may want to shoot Legoland951 a PM as he had some last time I checked.

Keep an eye on craigslist, and on vwvortex site. Some folks over there retrofit them to less costly (shall we say) cars, and the resale prices seem to be softer. Be sure to check out the seller though, getting warped ones doesn't help much...Also bear in mind the number of years they will have been around, even decent sets can usually due with a fresh coat of paint or powder.

Ok... So I have been reading alot about offsets. The OEM config on my 928 is an ET 65mm Wheel (7 slot) with a 21mm spacer on front and back.

Last summer, I mounted a set of boxter tires with a 7mm spacer in the rear, the space to the fender 'looked' about right so I stayed with this for a few months. I noticed that when turning at high speeds, like entering a highway ring, I felt the back end starting to slip to the outside, not a good feeling at all.

That said, I want to make sure I get it right with buying a set of phone dials. I read Phil Chadwick’s paper on specs and have the following concerns / question?

If the offset recommendation is 65mm for the 84 928S, though the later 944 phone dials are 52mm, then I am sticking out about ½ inch with the current 21mm spacers…

Did I get the math right? What would you guys suggest?

1. Don’t worry about it, the difference is marginal
2. replace the 21mm spacers with 8mm for the font and back (65-52 = 13) (21 – 13 = 8)
3. Look for ET 65mm Phone dials from an OB 928
4. Other?

I noticed that Hubb used OEM 928 Phone dials (ET 65mm) on the front and 944 (ET 52 mm) with 21mm spacer on the back. In Phil Chadwick document, he mentions that many 928 owners have had handling issues with less than ET 55mm on the front end.

Thoughts guys?

The front ET65 wheels should not have a spacer on the 928 - your reading is wrong on that one.

The factory spacers for 928's were only fitted to the rear wheels.

ET53 phone dials will fit at the front end, but the offset is a little low and the car's handling will suffer as a result - it'll lose some corner stability (need more "driving" through a corner), and be inclined to follow ruts/lines in the road.

I recently did a back-to-back comparison of 17" ET55 Boxster twists, against 17" ET65 GTS Cup II's on my '87 manual S4, with the same size rubber on each, and the difference in handling with just that change was surprisingly large. Corner stability and handling of ruts, road camber and speed were all markedly different (worse) with the ET55 wheels. People will say "55mm offset is fine, I run with it and have no issues", but after a direct comparison I'm not going to consider anything under ET60 for front wheels. Until I tried the Cup II's I'd only have ET50 and ET55 fronts (different sets) to try and didn't realise how much better the handling can be made using offsets the car was designed for.

ok, then on the front I will have an issue with the offset causing the wheel to stick out 1/2 inch... interesting. This would explain why Hupp put the ET65 928 phone dials on the front of his 928.

The factory also put the ET65 phone dials on the front wheels

Negative offset of 65mm is what the 928 suspension was designed for at the front, and is what all the factory 928 front wheels had for all model years (78-95), with the exception of the very rare Clubsport wheels found on about 1% of all 928's ever made.

Lower negative offset pushes the wheel outboard - but you have some room before the wheel is flush with the guard, let along outside it. My ET55 17x7 front wheels are still just inside the edge of the guard. The ET50 17x8 fronts on one of my other sets stick out beyond the fender a couple of mm's.

For rear offset, depending on rim width, around ET50 works pretty well (factory for rear wheels not requiring spacers, or without the wide-track optional spacers, was ET52.3mm)

Xlot, thanks this info is invaluable!

If i go with the ET 52/53 7" front wheels off a 944, it seems I will be within the limits of the fender. The only question that remains is a matter of handling.
