Default DIY hands on help in Austin area.

Happy holidays all!
I've been soaking up all the facts I can on my new 928. And I've looked at the engine long enough to see there's maintenance to be done.
I'd really like to become more familiar with the 928 engine etc...
if anyone can use an extra set of hands and some beer, I'll be glad to
see some 928 work in progress.
I'm in the Round Rock/Austin area.

Ron, welcome to Rennlist (as of last month) and to our Austin group. We have a few great projects going on over town. Brian (irishlegend) has an '82 that needs a new cam, Mark Robinson is building a midmount turbo racecar and I have an S4 engine I'm going through. I"m sure there are other projects going on that I"m not aware of. I haven't been able to make it to our monthly gatherings lately, but they're a great place to talk to the group and see whats going on. Not to mention our great venues.
What year car do you have? auto or 5spd and whats its condition?

Best, Ben

Ben, it's about time you got that car back together again and came out to a GTG.

Ron, How is the new car running?
We have a lot of owners in the area that just purchased a 928 within the last year, so there is plenty of deferred maintenance work going on around Austin. I would love to see us start up some tech sessions. James maintains an email list of all of the locals. It is a good way to get a second pair of eyes on any problems you have.

Tim,

Ron and I have had lunch together several times and he has been out to see the Morrison Collection a few times as well.

I don't have any projects to help him with though. I have not seen his car yet, but from pics and reports it sounds VERY NICE indeed! Just needs a new T-belt to be on the safe side and maybe some fluid changes and it will be good to go. Auto if I recall correctly '86 MY.

Well, I've put the 82 back together but I still haven't gotten the stop lamp problem properly diagnosed. If you guys want to try to plan a tech session, I'll be happy to bring the car and beer and could definitely use some help to try to chase these problems down. I'm not the most experienced tech, but with youth I bring a fresh back and knuckles to the shop, so all I would need is consulting, and I'd do the "heavy lifting" so to say.

Just regular maintenance issues for me and a broken odometer.

Ben, you're being modest about that 'S4 engine I'm going through'. Try bottom up re-build.

You've got the biggest job going so maybe tech session at your place?

My schedule is horrible for a tech session unfortunately (and I'm no tech. thank god for WSM's ). I will have some great pictures for the gang. Rods/mains gts baffle and a few other misc. things coming from Roger this week. Time to zip her back up. if anyone wants to drop by for a beer some night drop me a PM. No wrenching, but friendly BS is always welcome. Engine is out, upside down, crank out.

I'd love to host a tech session at my place, but it would require me cleaning up and organizing the garage and cleaning up the house. It's not something I'm opposed to doing, but I don't think I can plan that far ahead! Maybe I'll have one next summer

If you guys want to plan something in the next few days I would love to join for a few hours. The Houston crowd will be together Jan 3rd. I can travel to Austin in the next few days if it will work.

Good to hear from you guys.
I have an ’86 AT with 93000 miles on it. Red and black. It needs a good amount of TLC and maintenance. The interior is in very good shape. The body looks good but it has a couple of spots where the paint is chipping (bottom of passenger side window) but I don’t see any rust. It has the original disk wheels with a shiny chrome finish. The engine looks like a dirty mess. Some oil and PS fluid’s now on my garage floor.
I don’t have it registered or insured yet, so I’ve only driven it for about 5 minutes. It takes about 4 secs. to start. Idles real good at about 6 to 800rpm. I’ve gone up to 50mph fairly quickly and it feels real solid, glued to the road, good cornering and no rattles. The transmission shifts very rough and when standing still it clunks with noise from park to drive or reverse. Also in park, I hear noise from the back which I think may be a fuel pump?
It keeps accellerating , steady non-stop as long as I hold the pedal down, but stays at low rpms. I feel some push against the seat, but not strong like I’ve felt in a 924 turbo.
I don’t know what 300ft/lbs should feel like. Maybe the transmission is switching gears too early? Even when I floor it the rpms don’t jump high. I’ll know more when I can drive it. Besides no insurance, I’d also like to change the TM and belts. They’re starting to have cracks between the teeth. I started checking the ignition and I guess the next things will be new belts, fluids, fuel filter? Transmission fluid and filter? I’m making it up as I read more on this forum. Without it, I would have to have it almost all done by mechanics.
Don, I wish I could be around for your project. If we had an Autobahn I would be.
Thanks for all the great write ups. Being around for even simple maintenance work would be cool. So if you feel altruistic or like company, PM me anytime.
Calgary – drop by my place if you feel like it.

Me too.
I get the feeling I'll just HAVE TO take another (longer) risky ride.
