Default Parking Lot 3 - Front Spoiler 0 -- Good news !

Hi Everyone,

Well it finally happened, a concrete stop in a parking lot ripped off right side of my front spoiler on my '88 928 S4! I tied up the remaining spoiler (see the string in the photo) and drove home.

What are my options?

1) Take the spoiler off completely and forget about it?

2) Buy a new or used spoiler and have it installed?

Price for a replacement spoiler on 928 Specialists is $562 plus shipping and installation. Any recommedations or suggestions would be welcome.

Owning this 928 is like death by 1,000 cuts....I love the car but, geez I am so pissed.

VTY,
Joe Taylor

You can try to find a used one, take it off and drive it, until you find one. I've seen used ones usually in the $250-$350 range.

Here's one for $340 w/ free shipping.

Unhappy

Joe:

My sympathies for your loss. If it wasn't a parking barrier, it would have been a steep driveway, pot hole, dip or something similar. I just took mine off since it is a daily driver (or will be again if I can get it running) and was tired or constantly hearing that scraping sound.

So, did you pull up too far then rip it apart backing out?

I've been thinking of making some sort of parking assist like the back up sensors that alarms when you are getting too close to a parking curb. I've had several people tell me it was a great idea.

When I had my 944 Turbo I bumped against a parking curb, when it pushed the spoiler back it pushed a radiator hose into a belt pulley and whoosh. That was a $200 line that had to be replaced.

That sucks....tough to imagine that being the fault of the car, however. Almost anything these days has a front spoiler that you can rip off if you try hard enough.

It was so loud when the spoiler pulled off, everyone in the parking lot turned around and made faces when they saw what happened. Some lady said to me, "Don't worry honey, it looks good without the spoiler".

Patrick, RKD - Maybe I need to get some of those "curb feelers" people used to install on their cars.

VTY,
Joe

I hope you got her phone number.. if she actually used the word "spoiler" for that piece, she likes cars

Seriously tho', 928motorsports sells skid plates that protect the spoiler - someone I know has them fitted locally, and has no compunction driving right up to those low concrete steps in car parks - worst that happens is a metallic scrape as it rides up on the plates.

Operator error, Joe.

Replace it and be more careful.

Helps you park, and has other uses.

Hi Hilton,

She did say "spoiler", so you are right. If she was cuter, I would have chatted her up and got her phone number, but she had that "rode hard and put up wet" look, haha. A little to ruff and old for me.

It was definately operator error, Randy. I have a new rule, never, NEVER, EVER park in a spot with one of those concrete stops.

I am inclined to buy another spoiler and have the damaged one replaced. But my question to you, Hilton, is does the metal skid plate really protect the spoiler. I didnt think that it came out that far forward.

The PO of my car's mechanic removed and deleted the old belly pans on the car, so there are no belly pan(s) at all... and now I have a damaged spoiler as well. What's a boy to do?

Joe

I have steep driveways. After my first involuntary spoiler r and r I installed the skidplates and have been pleased with their effectiveness. Happy New Year!!

Rod,

Can you expand on that for me.

Should I take off my spoiler and put on a metal skid plate(s)?

Or, buy a new spoiler and metal skid plate and everything is ok?

I need to understand what the skid plate can do for me.

Thanks,
Joe

Well I think the obvious answers are to set the ride height to stock and stop before you get to curbs or parking lot blocks. i don't see what's so badly damaged here - if the mounting points were ripped off - use JB weld to recreate them and reattach to the stock mouning points - you may need some new hardware but that should be cheap...

Seems to me if it came off without damaging the fender - it was already loosened/broken in places.
