Default Need help finding a part, shifter centering spring in the trans.

928 303 034 03 or 928 303 034 09

They are the shifter centering springs for the borg warner trans.

Prefferably the latter. I checked with Roger Tyson of 928sRUs, Pelican, parts yards, 5th Gear Motorsports and Boardwalk Porsche and both claim there to be NONE in the US. Does any one know where to find these?

Is this the spring that always breaks and gets stuck to the magnetic drain plug?

Between hearing that Mark Anderson was having trouble finding used 928 transmission parts, and seeing the (bent) lever spring (034 09) that came out of my GTS, I got what I think was the last one from Sunset to put into the GT when I go through that tranny. Jeff said there were no more in Germany either. I hope Porsche gets their stuff together and makes another batch of these- eventually every manual box is going to need one. At $150 a pop, you'd think the profit motive would move them to make more.....

I think it's the reverse spring (928 303 287 01) that is most commonly found on the drain plug.

What about having a spring made? I have been told that a good machinist should be able to make one or there are many manufacturers that advertise their willingness and ability to make custom springs. I have no idea about pricing, but if the part is NLA.....

The upper lockout spring was not available for about a year. They remade it.

I'm sure they will make the centering spring again. In the meantime, we do have some perfect looking used ones that have been magnafluxed.

It's one of them.

The reverse lockout spring is just a piece of stamped steel that snaps off after a period of time. (shown in left of pic above) I don't think the reverse lockout spring could hurt anything in the trans. This one could though:

Both appear to be under-engineered for the task at hand. I think Erkka said you could expect about 5 years out of each one, then if you don't replace them they'll break anyway. Here are the broken lockout spring, the shift centering spring and the front seal which also went bad on mine.

I found a guy with two new springs.

He knows they are no longer available. Wants $350.00 ea.

A bit pricey, but they are the last ones....so I understand. Guess if we could buy '54 Speedster doors for what they cost originally, that would be a great deal, but that is never going to happen.

Wow.

Guess I should have gotten a few more when I did mine last year.

I have one unused late style. First $2k offer gets it.

It might be possible to get 10+ years out of the spring but I haven't seen single one which was that old and didn't have any signs of problems.

If someone wants to send me a broken sample, I can make a batch for a lot less than 350 ea....how much depends on quantity..

Well I may just have to take one.

svp928- you say you can make some?? Ive honestly thought about it I just didnt want my car to sit that much longer while I go figure it out in what little spare time I have. If you have the means and the PROPER materials I wouldnt mind sending one out to you once I get it out... might benefit a lot of people around here if you made some.

Yes we can make them, if there really aren't any to be had. I will see if my local source has one I can look at, if not I will pm you with my address.

Thanks
Steve

Steve, I have an old one that is going to be coming my way and will be looking at making a new and updated type of part that wont have the same failure point that the factory piece does.

Colin, keep me posted- I don't want to duplicate any efforts, the market is too small...
