Default Audi A4 1.8 T

How does a 2003 stack up against a 928?

My friend just got a 2003 with lots of small mods, plus pushing about 18-20 lbs boost.

4WD faster off line...928 catches up past 100. Above 120 928 leaves.

My neighbour had am '01 Jetta 1.8T, chipped (180hp) and there is no way it was faster than the 928 in any shape or form. It was quick, just not quick enough.

Depends on the gear. If you're not ready and in the torque band you will lose. Even in my 349hp Godzilla, I had my *** handed to me once because I underestimated a 1.8T and stayed in 4th.

I don't know - I had a chipped Jetta 1.8t with downpipe blah, blah that would have given my pre SC S4 a very, very good run for the money

I had a 2003 1.8T Quattro. Sold it just after I bought my 83 5-Speed.
A good car. Great build quality but no charisma. The 928 gives me a buzz - the Audi left me a bit cold.
I think from memory they were just about the same weight & roughly the same size. Mine was a standard A4 1.8T Quattro & did not feel anywhere near as fast as my 83 928S. Better in the wet though.
It did make me wish that Audi built a 928 these days just for the build quality of a modern audi, but yeah, it would obviously cost the earth.
p.s. my old 79 928 had cruise control that slowed the car as well as sped it up to the set speed. The 2003 A4 only slowed the car, so going down hills you would break the speed limit.

Cheers,

Tom

My winter car is a 2003 A4 1.8T and unless the road is wet the S4 has it beat to 100mph.The A4 is quicker to maybe 30 mph because mine has a slush box i.e. I just mash the pedal.

That's because of the transmission desing. One stays in gear (like a manual transmission) when decelerating while the other freewheels (much like putting a manual in neutral or pushing the clutch in).
